In het tijdschrift ‘Riolering’ van oktober 2017 staat een artikel met de kop: “het riool als toeristische attractie”. Riolen bezoeken begint hip te worden. Rioolwater komt zo zelfs op de recreatieagenda van burgers en schoolkinderen. In het artikel wordt, in het werkgebied van het waterschap Brabantse Delta, de Grebbe beschreven. Een middeleeuwse watergang die in de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw het hoofdriool werd van Bergen op Zoom. Er werd ook verwezen naar het rioolmuseum in Brussel. De website van dit museum is zeker een bezoek waard.
Een andere website die de aandacht verdient van mensen die zich verdiepen in ‘waterproblemen’ is de website www.klimaateffectatlas.nl. Deze website geeft globaal per locatie in Nederland informatie van de te verwachten klimaateffecten tussen nu en 2050. Als voorbeelden de effecten voor mijn eigen woongemeente Bergen op Zoom: het aantal dagen met een temperatuur van gelijk of boven de 25 graden neemt toe van 20 á 30 dagen per jaar nu, naar 40 á 50 dagen per jaar in 2050 en het aantal dagen gelijk of boven de 30 graden neemt toe van 3 á 6 dagen per jaar naar 12 á 15 dagen per jaar, met alle gevolgen voor mensen die last hebben en gezondheidseffecten van warmte ervaren. De Ministerraad heeft in december 2016 de Nationale Klimaatadaptatie Strategie (NAS) vastgesteld. Deze NAS moet, mijn inziens, voor iedere Nederlandse overheidsinstantie de leidraad worden van haar handelen.

De onthulling van een kunstwerk onder een viaduct over de Hoofseweg te Oosterhout. Het kunstwerk is ontworpen door Laura Evens en Vera Vermeulen en vormgegeven door grafisch vormgever Heidi Rombouts. Marian Witte heeft samen met buurtbewoners en andere betrokkenen het kunstwerk onthuld. Ik was de bestuurlijke vertegenwoordiger van het waterschap.
17 oktober
De vergadering van het dagelijks bestuur met als agendapunten o.a. de deelname aan het Deltaplatform, de samenwerking in de Zuidwestelijke Delta en de inzet van het waterschap bij toekomst scenario’s. Besproken is ook de rol/houding van het waterschap bij activiteiten van derden.
19 oktober
In de middag de onthulling van een aantal veenpalen op landgoed Pannenhoef te Rijsbergen. Zelf mocht ik een veenpaal bij de Bijloop onthullen.
In de avond fractievergadering van Ons Water/West-Brabant Waterbreed over onder andere de AB agenda van volgende week en mijn opvolging in het DB en de verkiezingen in 2019.
