In het Nationaal Waterplan 2009-2015 was het bestrijden van verzilting nog één van de belangrijkste wateropgaven. De argumenten van toen zijn nog steeds geldig! Ook de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk was niet alleen om op termijn nieuw land aan te winnen en de omliggende gebieden beter te beschermen tegen de dreiging van stormvloeden, maar ook voor de kansen die verzoeting van de Zuiderzee zou kunnen geven voor de landbouw en de bestrijding van de Hollandse malariamug die alleen in brak water kon overleven en zich voortplanten.
Bijna geheel Noord-Holland boven het Noordzee Kanaal was verzilt en kende jaarlijks duizenden malariapatiënten. In 1946 waren er nog circa 9000 malariapatiënten, voornamelijk veroorzaakt door de Hollandse malariamug. Zie het artikel in de Elsevier van die tijd “In 1946 rond 9000 patiënten.” De jaren 1880, 1902 en 1922 waren topjaren. De Hollandse malariamug is vrijwel uitgestorven en de parasiet, die de malaria-epidemieën toen veroorzaakten, is al jaren niet meer aangetroffen. Maar als de mug weer meer brak water ter beschikking krijgt, kan ook de parasiet weer een bedreiging vormen. Toen schreef de Elsevier: “Men verlieze echter niet uit het oog, dat de ontzilting van Noord-Holland de beste manier van malariabestrijding is. Wij zien met spanning uit naar de dag, waarop het water in Noord-Holland verzoet zal zijn. De strijd tegen het zoute water zal moeilijk zijn en blijvend, ook door de zoute kwellen in Noord-Holland. Maar wij hopen toch, dat de blijvende verzoeting binnen 10 jaar bereikt zal zijn. Er staan enorme belangen mee op het spel, voor de welvaart en voor de volksgezondheid.”
