Het symposium Klimaat Actieve Stad (KAS) in wijkvoorzieninggebouw Prismare te Enschede, georganiseerd door waterschap Vechtstromen. Prismare is gelegen in het gebied waar op 13 mei 2000 de vuurwerkramp was die 23 mensen het leven kostte en 950 mensen heeft verwond. Na de bestuurlijke discussie koos ik in de ochtend voor een lezing door Nanco Dolman over benchmarking en de stuurbaarheid van klimaatmaatregelen. Mij trof ‘we doen wat bewoners willen’, terwijl naar mijn inzicht er gedaan moet worden wat nodig is om de samenleving voor te bereiden op wat komen gaat. Hij verwees naar “water sensitive urban design” en het Landscape Instituut (de Engelse versie van de STOWA). Daarna een lezing over de ‘leefstraat’ in Gent door Dries Gysels en Wim de Smet over KAS in de praktijk van ‘Gent klimaatstad’. In de middag was een indrukwekkende presentatie door Reinier van den Berg, een meteoroloog werkzaam bij weerinstituut MeteoGroup Nederland. Hij vermeldde de film Before the Flood van Leonardo DiCaprio en verwees daarbij naar een eerdere film van Leonardo DiCaprio de Titanic, waarbij het schip met meer 1500 duizend zielen ten onderging, terwijl de band in de eerste klas bleef spelen.
Ook nu ziet hij een “klimaatontwrichting” in ontwikkeling, terwijl de mensheid gewoon blijft genieten van alles wat dit veroorzaakt. In zijn ogen kon het reeds in 1930 voor de wetenschappers duidelijk zijn wat de broeikasgassen, zoals CO2, zouden gaan betekenen voor de wereld waarop wij leven. Hij voorzag op korte termijn een ijsvrije Noordelijke IJszee aan het eind van de zomer. Wat betekent dat voor de mens en de dieren in die wateren? Mijn vraag: wat gaat dit betekenen voor al de steden aan de kusten van de wereld, de voedselproductie en de mensheid in zijn totaliteit? En we ‘feesten’ gewoon door!
