De coronapandemie laat zien dat infectieziekten nog lang niet de wereld uit zijn. Ook de toenemende weerstand onder grote delen van de bevolking tegen vaccineren kan een oorzaak worden dat infectieziekten, waarvan we veronderstellen dat we ze onder de knie hebben in de toekomst toch weer de kop op steken.
De afgelopen jaren heb ik met regelmaat aandacht gevraagd voor de ontwikkeling van resistente bacteriën in en met onze zuiveringen waarbij het voorkomen van medicijnresten in het afvalwater een factor kan zijn. Recent is er een update ‘Medicijnresten en waterkwaliteit’ verschenen van het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM)
Ook laat een ander RIVM-onderzoek zien dat in mest en in afvalwater steeds meer bacteriën voorkomen die resistent zijn tegen antibiotica en daarmede een steeds groter probleem vormen voor de gezondheidszorg. De verspreiding vindt plaats via het uitrijden van mest en via de afvalwaterzuiveringsinstallaties waarbij de resistentie bacteriën uiteindelijk in ons oppervlaktewater terecht komen. Ook overstorten en verkeerde aansluitingen in geschieden rioolstelsels dragen hieraan bij. In gebieden met gescheiden rioolstelsels worden in het oppervlaktewater meer resistente bacteriën gevonden.
Naar resistente bacteriën wordt steeds meer onderzoek gedaan, maar tot een echte aanpak in onze rioolwaterzuiveringen komt het nog niet, terwijl in Duitsland en Zwitserland wel concrete stappen op dit gebied worden gezet. Zoals gebruikelijk is de vraag: wie gaat dat betalen? Ik acht de groeiende gezondheidsrisico’s zodanig dat er nu echt aan de slag moet worden gegaan met de aanpak van bacteriën in onze zuiveringen en in de effluentlozingen. Nu komen er steeds meer resistente bacteriën in het oppervlaktewater terecht. Dus ook in oppervlaktewater dat gebruikt wordt om drinkwater van te maken. De risico’s nemen toe en dat zou moeten betekenen dat met de aanpak haast moet worden gemaakt. Wie het gaat betalen, is dan een zaak waar de dames en heren politici desnoods later besluiten over moeten gaan nemen.
