(NATTE/ZOUTE) DROOM OF NACHTMERRIE – 39: ACTUALITEITEN
Het is tijd om in deze reeks de stand van zaken rond de (voorgenomen) verzilting van het Volkerak-Zoommeer toe te lichten. De afgelopen maanden komen er steeds meer berichten dat de financiering van het regionale deel, ruim honderd miljoen euro (NATTE 27) problemen geeft.
Op 8 juli verscheen het toetsingsadvies Rijksstructuurvisie Grevelingen Volkerak-Zoommeer van de Commissie voor de milieueffectrapportage inclusief een persbericht. “Het nieuwe rapport gaat uitgebreid in op de huidige toestand van de natuur en de effecten van de geplande maatregelen (namelijk het terugbrengen van eb en vloed in de Grevelingen en het zout maken van het Volkerak-Zoommeer). Uit het rapport blijkt dat sommige negatieve gevolgen voor de huidige natuur groter zijn dan eerder verwacht en dat de positieve gevolgen van het terugbrengen van eb en vloed in de Grevelingen en het zout maken van het Volkerak-Zoommeer nog onzeker zijn. De Commissie constateert dat sommige negatieve effecten in het nieuwe rapport mogelijk zijn onderschat. Ook landelijke natuurdoelstellingen voor enkele soorten komen in gevaar, bijvoorbeeld voor kustbroedvogels (bijvoorbeeld Strandplevier, grote stern en dwergstern) in de Grevelingen. De Commissie adviseert daarom eerst nader te onderzoeken welke maatregelen nodig zijn om natuurschade tegen te gaan en daarmee negatieve gevolgen voor de natuurdoelstellingen te voorkomen en daarna pas een besluit over de structuurvisie te nemen.” Kortom buiten het gebrek aan geld, is er alle reden om het plan op de zeer lange baan te schuiven. De kwaliteit van het water in het Volkerak-Zoommeer is al jaren aan het verbeteren en daarmee van zelfsprekend de natuurwaarden, zoals die nu door de Commissie zijn vastgesteld. In deze reeks werd daar eerder over geschreven.
Vorige maand heeft de Tweede Kamer een motie aangenomen voor het terugbrengen van het getij in het Grevelingenmeer. De Kamer heeft verder de beslissing over de verzilting van het Volkerak-Zoommeer uitgesteld. Goed voor de natuur en het toerisme, zeggen voorstanders, maar boeren en tuinders zijn bang voor extra kweldruk langs het Grevelingenmeer en oplopende chloridegehaltes van het Volkerak-Zoommeer. In de Staat van Ons Water over 2015 is ten aanzien van de aanpak van de oplopende chloridegehaltes te lezen:
“Planuitwerking Innovatieve Zoet-Zoutscheiding Krammersluizen
Nadat eerst een pilot in de Krammerjachtensluis was uitgevoerd, is Rijkswaterstaat in maart 2015 is gestart met het project Planuitwerking Innovatieve Zoet-Zoutscheiding Krammersluizen. Aanleiding vormt de vraag of de huidige zoet-zoutscheiding, die aan groot onderhoud toe is, kan worden vervangen door een innovatieve zoet-zoutscheiding. Dit innovatieve systeem gaat de uitwisseling van zoet en zout water tegen door het creëren van een fijn gordijn van luchtbelletjes, in combinatie met het spoelen met zoet water. Daarmee wordt verzilting van het Volkerak-Zoommeer tegengegaan. Het nieuwe systeem zorgt naar verwachting ook voor Pilot bellenscherm Krammersluis een aanzienlijk sneller schutproces en een forse besparing op beheer- en onderhoudskosten. De resultaten van de planuitwerking dienen als basis voor een definitief besluit in 2016. Daarna is duidelijk of kan worden gestart met de realisatie van de innovatieve zoet-zoutscheiding in alle Krammersluizen.” Ons Water heeft hier vaak over geschreven (het laatst in december 2015) en Ons Water zal de voortgang zeker volgen en zonodig zal Ons Water hierover bij de bestuurders aan de bel trekken.
De plannenmakerij duurt al meer dan tien jaren. Met boeren en tuinders is in het verleden de afspraak gemaakt: eerst het zoet, dan het zout. De onzekerheid over de verzilting van het Volkerak-Zoommeer duurt voort en dat is meer dan vervelend. Het wordt tijd dat de overheid bij zinnen komt en het project afblaast als volkomen overbodig en te risicovol.
Voor Ons Water is helder: de onnodige verspilling van geld en de vernietiging van de mooie natuur kan nog voorkomen worden. Stop de verzilting. Teken de petitie via https://www.petities24.com

Al eens geroken aan het Volkerakwater. Gatver….
Vorig weekend, zoals veel weekenden in de zomer weer op het Volkerak gevaren met onze boot. Het was een vieze dampende groene brijige soep. Zwemmen kon uiteraard niet. Verder 3 keer vastgevaren in een drijvend veld losgeraakte waterplanten. Zowel in als buiten de vaargeul. Steeds waterplanten in de schroef en onbestuurbaar. Met veel moeite (keerkoppeling voor- resp. achteruit zetten) de zaak weer op gang gekregen. Dit was voorgaande jaren ook enkele malen het geval. Enkele jaren geleden zodanig vast dat we door andere schepen zijn losgesleept (o.a. in kreek naar Oude Tonge, en direct na uitvaren Krammersluis waar een grote plak achter de deur lag etc.). Dus dat er sprake zou zijn van een verbeterend evenwicht in waterkwaliteit van het Volkerak? Keep on dreaming! Blauw alg en woekering van waterplanten zorgen voor een vies, onprettig en onveilig Volkerak.
Afgelopen zomer ook veel op het Volkerak vertoefd. Bij ons alleen geen dampende groene brijige soep…… en ook geen enkel probleem met vastvaren. Het Volkerak is een van de allermooiste zoete wateren van Nederland en hopelijk blijft dat ook zo. Stop de onzalige verziltingsplannen.
