OVER WATER – 83
De afgelopen weken heb ik, als portefeuillehouder cultuurhistorie, een paar keer aan de orde gehad de vraag hoe om te gaan met relicten van oude dijkverbeteringen, zoals de betonnen muurtjes op ’t Vaartje en de Waspiksedijk nabij Waspik en Haringmanblokken op de dijk langs het Volkerak tussen industriegebied Dintelmond en Willemstad. Reeds in mijn tienerjaren, toen ik soms ging varen met een bootje vanuit de Rattekaai op de Oosterschelde en bewondering koesterde voor het mooie robuuste betonwerk uitgevoerd volgens systeem Muralt, had ik al belangstelling voor dijken. Misschien was een deel van de bewondering wel gelegen in het feit dat het werk was uitgevoerd onder de verantwoordelijkheid van een bijna naamgenoot, Leo Kalle (geboren in 1843 en Westdorpe en overleden in 1930 in Rilland-Bath), als dijkbaas.

De betonnen muurtjes op de dijk bij Waspik zijn relicten uit vroegere tijden, toen de dijk goedkoop werd verhoogd met dit soort muurtjes met openingen waar vloedplanken in konden worden gezet.

De muurtjes tussen Noordschans en Willemstad zijn een soort Muralt muurtjes, waar nu aan de buitenzijde veelal grond tegenaan is gebracht. Ook hier werden doorgangen (coupures) gemaakt die met vloedplanken gesloten konden worden.

Tussen Willemstad en Dintelmond maakte ik nabij de Mannesmannweg een aantal foto’s van een Haringmankistdam. Deze kistdammen werden na de watersnoodramp gemaakt met zogenoemde betonnen Haringmanblokken, die gevuld werden met grond. De Zeeuwse firma Haringman-beton levert nog materialen die gebruikt worden bij de aanleg en versterking van dijken.

Als waterschapbestuurder probeer ik voornoemde dijkrelicten in het landschap te behouden, want ook latere generaties moeten, wat mij betreft, in de gelegenheid blijven in hun omgeving te kunnen leren van hoe onze voorouders bouwden aan hun veiligheid en daarbij iets toevoegden aan het landschap.
13 maart
Een PHO over de dijkverbetering Geertruidenberg/Amertak. Ik ging naar huis met ruim 8 centimeter stukken over dit project.
15 maart
Een PHO over een eventueel voor te financieren dijkverbeteringsproject in het dijktracé Willemstad/Tonnekreek/Noordschans en een PHO over de 8 centimeter stukken over de dijkverbetering Geertruidenberg/Amertak. Daarna ben ik het dijktracé Willemstad/ Tonnekreek/Noordschans gaan bekijken.
Hoog bezoek in de tuin van Bouvigne, zelfs een eend weet vanaf zijn plekje op de haag te genieten van het uitzicht.
