In juli 2016 stelde de Europese Unie de eerste lijst van 37 exotische planten en dieren vast. Recent heeft de Europese Raad van Ministers besloten om 12 invasieve exoten toe te voegen aan de lijst van 37 schadelijke uitheemse planten en dieren.

Deze toevoeging houdt in dat onder meer de reuzenberenklauw, de reuzenbalsemien, de nijlgans en de wasbeerhond actief bestreden en beheerd moeten gaan worden. Ook zal de handel in diverse tuinplanten, zoals mammoetblad, zijdeplant, lampenpoetsergras en ongelijkbladig vederkruid moeten worden gestaakt. Doel is om de natuur, het waterbeheer en de gezondheid te beschermen tegen deze woekerende soorten. Deze moeten op basis van de Verordening Invasieve Uitheemse Soorten in alle landen worden aangepakt om onder meer de inheemse natuur beschermen. Daarnaast moeten alle lidstaten uiterlijk februari volgend jaar beschikken over beheersmaatregelen om de soorten uit de natuur te verwijderen, dan wel te zorgen dat ze zich niet verder verspreiden.
De vraag die nu ook in de waterschappen en de gemeenten aan de orde zal moeten komen is: hoe gaan deze overheden, zowel in hun rol als overheid als in hun rol als eigenaar/terreinbeheerder, straks de bestrijding van deze invasieve exoten oppakken?

De vakantieperiode is voor mij de tijd om boeken te lezen waar ik in andere tijden niet aan toe kom. Zo heb ik recent gelezen ” ’t is groen en groener wordt het niet” geschreven door Leen Zevenbergen. Het is een boek over creativiteit en ondernemerschap. Ik kwam er een paar zaken in tegen die ik de moeite waard vind om anderen onder de aandacht te brengen: Maister heeft ooit onderzoek gedaan bij 139 zakelijke dienstverleners. Hij vond in dat onderzoek het bewijs dat een verhoging van 10 % medewerkertevredenheid leidde tot 10-15 % meer klanttevredenheid. En die klanttevredenheid leidde vervolgens weer tot 42 % betere financiële prestaties. Dat zet een bericht uit 2016, dat het waterschap, waar ik bestuurslid van mag zijn, werd uitgeroepen tot de “Beste Werkgever in de categorie Waterschappen“, voor mij in een ander licht en maakt mij als bestuurder best een beetje trots.
Ook bevatte het boek van Leen Zevenbergen nog een element om lering uit te trekken: “Binnen onze organisatie (die van Leen Zevenbergen) is het verboden om slecht nieuws in te spreken op de voicemail. Tevens mag op vrijdagmiddag geen slecht nieuws meer worden verspreid. Daar wacht je mee tot maandag.” “Slecht nieuws achterlaten op de voicemail heeft geen zin. Spreek het uit tegen de persoon, maar laat hem of haar niet met de brokken van het nieuws zitten. Zeker niet voor het weekend. Spui nooit negatieve energie als je weet dat de ander daar niets mee kan. Misschien geeft het jou een gevoel van “daar ben ik mooi vanaf”, maar het creëert bij de ander zoveel negatieve energie dat ze doodmoe uit het weekend komen. Terwijl dat weekend nou juist bedoeld is om op te laden.”
Voor mij is de tijd van de zomervakantie altijd een leerzame periode waarin ik keer op keer wat ‘wijsheden’ op doe.
