OVER WATER – 125: HERDENKING KAPELSCHE VEER
31 januari
Vandaag ben ik naar de herdenking van de strijd om Kapelsche Veer geweest. Het was de eerste herdenking bij het vernieuwde monument. Bij de herdenking waren vertegenwoordigers van de geallieerde strijdkrachten die deelnamen aan de strijd en Harry Prescott (95) een oud strijder die aan de strijd had deelgenomen.
De ambassadrice van Canada was aanwezig en militaire attachés (van Engeland en Noorwegen) en andere diplomatieke vertegenwoordigers (van België en Polen). Samen met andere organisaties legden zij bloemen en kransen. Wethouder van Groos verhaalde de geschiedenis en de ontwikkeling van het monument. Als waterschapbestuurder voel ik mij in hoge mate betrokken bij de Overdiepse Polder, de gevallenen en bij het monument (ik schreef daar, naar aanleiding van mijn afscheid, recent over). Bij het Ruimte voor de Rivier project was het monument een belangrijk punt van aandacht. Het monument werd in de plannen bij het gebruik van de Overdiepse Polder voor waterberging een eiland. Een herkenbaar baken, waar het stenen gedeelte en de treurwilg hun plaats behielden.
In april 2016 schreef ik over de treurwilg na de grote stormschade aan de boom op de dijk bij de Overdiepse Polder: “Deze boom maakt een wezenlijk deel uit van het herdenkingsmonument ter nagedachtenis aan de gevallenen bij de slag om Kapelsche Veer. De treurwilg werd in de slag nagenoeg totaal vernietigd, maar overleefde en herleefde, net als zijn omgeving. De treurwilg maakt deel uit van een uniek monument. Mijn uitgangspunt is dat de inzet moet zijn de boom een overlevingskans te bieden. Snel ingrijpen is dus noodzakelijk om deze boom die kans te geven. Hij is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de slag en het monument. Niet alleen voor de bewoners van de Overdiepse Polder maar voor gehele omgeving.” Ook nu bij het hernieuwde en uitgebreide monument is voor mij de treurwilg, die het allemaal heeft meegemaakt, een wezenlijk onderdeel van het monument. Het stenen deel van het monument en de treurwilg zijn voor mij één en ondeelbaar!
Ik vond het dan ook een ontsiering van de herdenking dat tijdens de krans- en bloemenleggingen een fotografe van het Brabants Dagblad vanaf de dijk waar de treurwilg op staat fotografeerde. Zij bevond zich tijdens het fotograferen tussen de treurwilg en het stenen deel van het monument. Tijdens een plechtigheid als deze vind ik het ongepast het monument te beklimmen en daarmede het zicht op het monument (de boom) te verstoren. Juist bij plechtige monumenten is het betreden van het monument, naar mijn gevoel, niet gepast. Ik vond het ook raar dat de fotografe klaarblijkelijk dacht dat het fotograferen van de kransleggers en het publiek belangrijker was dan het feit dat er kransen bij het monument werden gelegd. Toen ik in de gelegenheid was aan het einde van de plechtigheid haar daarover aan te spreken werd ik betiteld als een “zeikerd” en voegde ze toe “ik maak toch niks kapot”. Ook wees ze mij erop dat noch de gemeente noch de politie het haar verbood. Het feit dat ik een ‘zeikerd’ ben bestrijd ik niet. Dagelijks ontlast ik mij meerdere malen van overbodige lichaamsvloeistoffen. Ook wil ik bevestigen dat zij met haar bescheiden voetmaat in materiële zin, behoudens wat gekrenkte grassprietjes, niets kapot maakte. In immateriële zin echter vind ik dat er wel veel door haar kapot werd gemaakt, zoals: het respect voor hen die herdacht werden, het respect voor de gelegenheid, het respect voor de vertegenwoordiging van hen die vielen en het respect voor de integriteit van het monument op een moment dat betreden ongepast is. Ja, er werd niet ingegrepen door de aanwezigen van de gemeente, door de politie of door aanwezige militairen. Had dat gekund zonder de gelegenheid te verstoren? Ik denk het niet. Zij en enkele anderen stonden op het monument voordat iemand er erg in had. Ingrijpen was dan een verstoring van iets wat plechtig en respectvol zou moeten zijn.
Jammer dat een vertegenwoordigster van een medium als het Brabantse Dagblad zelf niet door heeft dat niet alles kan voor een ‘mooi’ plaatje. Ik was niet de enige die er zo over dacht. Ik ben mij er van bewust dat degenen die met mij er schande overspraken overwegend oude grijze ‘zeikerds’ zijn. ‘Zeikerds’ die nog gevoel hebben bij wat er in de winter 1944/45 is gebeurd en waar het monument in hun ogen voor staat. Jammer dat hun gevoel voor hoe het hoort en respect een andere is dan die vertegenwoordigster van het Brabantse Dagblad.
In de vergadering van het Algemeen Bestuur werd die avond mijn opvolger in het Dagelijks Bestuur verkozen. Niels Mureau. Ik zal als lid van het Algemeen Bestuur hem ondersteunen en controleren bij het vervullen van de mooie taak het waterschap Brabantse Delta mee te besturen.
