OVER WATER – 144: HIJ KOMT, DE TIJGERMUG
Recent dook de tijgermug (Aedes albopictus), een Aziatische muggensoort, op in acht Nederlandse gemeenten in de provincies Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Flevoland, Gelderland, Overijssel en Limburg. De tijgermug kan nare ziekten overbrengen, zoals dengue (knokkelkoorts) en zika. Volgens Arnold van Vliet wordt Nederland door klimaatverandering geschikter als leefgebied voor de tijgermug. Zijn stelling op het 1e hittestress congres van 25 juni te Den Bosch was: “Het is niet de vraag óf, maar wanneer hij zich in Nederland zal vestigen.”
Het ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) volgt de opmars van de tijgermug in Europa. In 2000 kwam de tijgermug alleen rond de Middellandse Zeevoor. Nu leeft hij al tot aan de Atlantische kust van Frankrijk, in de Vogezen en in Noord-Frankrijk. Ons Nederlandse klimaat lijkt geschikt voor de tijgermug. De hoeveelheid neerslag en de gemiddelde wintertemperatuur worden, gezien de klimaatontwikkelingen, steeds gunstiger voor de tijgermug.
De tijgermug is een gemene steker. Nu hun komst onafwendbaar lijkt, moeten we ons er op gaan voorbereiden. Dat betekent mensen vertellen dat stilstaand water in bakken, potten en vijvers middels de tijgermug, bronnen kunnen gaan worden van ernstige ziekten zoals dengue en zika. Nieuwbouwhuizen zouden in de toekomst bijvoorbeeld standaard uitgerust moeten worden met voorzieningen voor horren. Maar ook gemeentelijke overheden zullen na moeten gaan denken over of en hoe ons rioolstelsel beter kan worden ingericht of hoe de tijgermug daarin kan worden bestreden. Rioolputten/straatkolken, met hun stilstaande water, kunnen in de toekomst broedplaatsen worden van tijgermuggen. Zeker bij nieuwbouwwijken verdient het overweging te kijken wat er anders kan en misschien zelfs anders moet.
