Groen, Groen , Groen moet het adagium worden. Groen in de openbare ruimte is een belangrijk hulpmiddel bij het aanpakken van hittestress en wateroverlast, en het versterken van de biodiversiteit.
Er komt steeds meer belangstelling voor nuttige en esthetische toepassingen van groen op harde verticale oppervlakken zoals beton. Beton is een hard, steen- of rotsachtig materiaal. Daarom zou je in eerste instantie denken dat het net zo makkelijk begroeid raakt met mossen, korstmossen, algen of schimmels als een stuk rots in de natuur. Toch heeft beton chemische eigenschappen die het juist niet zo geschikt maken voor begroeiing. Beton is door de productiewijze vaak alkalisch (hogere pH-waarde). Een zo hoge pH-waarde is in het algemeen minder geschikt voor begroeiing. Maar door verschillende omstandigheden kan de pH-waarde aan de buitenkant van het beton dalen, waardoor mossen, algen en korstmossen zich toch kunnen vestigen. Onder sommige omstandigheden tast begroeiing van beton het materiaal aan. Waarom en onder welke omstandigheden beton begroeid raakt, is niet altijd duidelijk. Onderzoek is nuttig om te beoordelen in welke mate begroeiing zorgt voor schade, of dat spontane begroeiing het gevolg is van eerdere schade. Begroeiing hoeft niet altijd nadelig te zijn. Er zijn ook veel positieve argumenten te bedenken voor begroeiing op beton. Kleurige korstmossen kunnen een gebouw of constructie verfraaien. Volgens sommige onderzoeken kunnen algen en korstmossen de oppervlaktelaag van beton verdichten en daarmee de levensduur verlengen. Begroeiing kan goed zijn voor het plaatselijke ecosysteem door het vasthouden van regenwater en het afvangen van fijnstof en stikstofoxiden. Voor de vaak afzichtelijke geluidschermen langs onze snelwegen lijkt mij vergroening met begroeiing een ecologische stap in de goede richting. Een voorbeeld van een gebouw waar begroeiing een onderdeel is van het ontwerp, is het gemeentehuis van Reykjavik. Daarnaast zijn onderzoekers van de Polytechnische Universiteit van Catalonië in Barcelona bezig met de ontwikkeling van ‘biologisch beton’ met een speciale buitenlaag die water vasthoudt voor begroeiing, gescheiden door een waterdichte laag van het binnenste constructiebeton.
Begroeiing van harde oppervlakken kan ontsierende graffiti zoals op de brugsteunen in het Anton van Duinkerkenpark voorkomen en een bijdrage leveren aan de verfraaiing van de omgeving en versterking van de biodiversiteit. Anders kijken kan de wereld mooier maken en een bijdrage leveren aan de aanpak van hittestress en de klimaatveranderingen
