Blauwalg
Ik schreef er al vele malen over, vooral in relatie met het Volkerak-Zoommeer. Het is keer op keer een onderwerp van gesprek in gemeenteraden en dagelijkse en algemene besturen van waterschappen. Veel plannen tot aanpak worden door waterschappen gemaakt. Zelf hou ik bij wat er op dit gebied in de literatuur voor (goede) ideeën voorbij komt. Zo schreef ik eerder over de proef met geluidsgolven in de Zoetermeerse Plas (systeem LG Sonic) en wat de komst van de quaggamossel betekent voor de ontwikkeling van de blauwalgoverlast in het Volkerak-Zoommeer. Mijn eigen waterschap Brabantse Delta neemt in Waalwijk proeven met cilinders met aluminium waarmee de blauwalgen samenklonteren en dan naar de bodem zouden zakken. Waterschap de Dommel heeft de Jan van Galenvijver in Vught leeggevist, waarna een deel van de vissen weer is teruggeplaatst. De rest wordt uitgezet in een andere vijver. Naast het afvissen van de vijver worden, om de waterkwaliteit te verbeteren, dit jaar micro-organismen en waterplanten aan de vijver toegevoegd om zodoende meer te leren over de invloed van de biotoopsamenstelling op de ontwikkeling van de blauwalgen. Het Hoogheemraadschap van Delftland pakt de blauwalgen aan met verdund waterstofperoxide in de zwemplas de Delftse Hout (blijkt slechts een paar weken te werken) en in de Krabbeplas in Vlaardingen. Het waterschap Noorderzijlvest neemt in het Paterswoldsemeer een proef met een algensensor om daarmee te leren hoe de algen zich ontwikkelen en onder andere de doorstroming van het meer daar op af te stemmen. Kortom: de waterschappen en gemeenten zoeken samen naar succesvolle methoden om de blauwalgproblemen aan te pakken. Tegelijkertijd is de inzet de belasting van wateren met fosfaten en nitraten met algemene maatregelen terug te dringen en daarmee het voedselaanbod voor de blauwalgen te verminderen. Ook de komst en verspreiding van de quaggamossel leidt door hun algenvraatzucht vaak tot vermindering van de blauwalgoverlast. Dat geeft optimisme voor de toekomst.

Zoals je in je artikel nr.8 van 7 december 2014 schreef zou de Quaggamossel mogelijk een oplossing kunnen zijn voor het blauwalgenprobleem. Op een informatieavond over de verzilting van het Volkerak Zoom Meer in Steenbergen ( 25 mei 2016 )heb ik dan ook gevraagd of Rijkswaterstaat onderzoek uitvoert naar de quaggamossel. Met name dan in hoeverre het zoutgehalte invloed heeft op de levensvatbaarheid en voortplantingsvermogen van de quaggamossel. Als antwoord kreeg ik dat hier geen onderzoek op uitgevoerd wordt omdat de quaggamossel een uitheems diertje is en er zodoende geen betrouwbare blijvende effecten van te verwachten zijn.
Met dit antwoord krijg ik het idee dat rijkswaterstaat kost wat kost de verzilting van het VZM zal doorzetten. Een mogelijk relatief goedkope natuurlijke oplossing zoals de quaggamossel wordt waarschijnlijk ten gronde gericht door het zouter wordende VZM. Dit als gevolg van achterstallig en uitgesteld onderhoud van de diverse lekkende sluizen.
Het zou de provincies en waterschappen sieren om rijkswaterstaat op haar verantwoordelijkheden te wijzen en zo spoedig mogelijk onderhoud aan de diverse kunstwerken te gaan laten uitvoeren.
