STOF TOT NADENKEN
Stof tot nadenken is voor mij vaak het combineren van zaken die ik lees of hoor. Soms op dezelfde dag. Afgelopen donderdag was zo’n dag. Bij het lezen van BNdeStem die morgen trof mij het bericht met de kop: “Seismologen vrezen woede van Italianen”.
Nu kennen we de Italianen als een soms heetgebakerd en emotioneel volk. Bij de beving die in 2009 L’Aquilla trof liepen de emoties tegen wetenschappers, die de aardbeving niet voorzagen, zo hoog op dat zij in eerste instantie voor de rechter werden gesleept en aanvankelijk werden veroordeeld tot straffen tot zes jaar. Gelukkig werden deze onfortuinlijke wetenschappers na een lang vervolgproces alsnog vrijgesproken. Wetenschappers/experts kunnen met de kennis van vandaag helaas geen betrouwbare voorspellingen doen over aardbevingen. Toch laat het voorval zien dat ‘deskundigen’ niet altijd meer op het vertrouwen van het publiek, de burger, meer kunnen rekenen.
Later op de dag woonde ik de netwerkbijeenkomst bij van de Noord-Brabantse Waterschapsbond. Hier noteerde ik de volgende opmerking van watergraaf Peter Glas van waterschap de Dommel: “Als je het water ‘verprutst’, pleeg je een misdaad”. Dat belooft wat. Ik zie het al voor me. Waterschapsbestuurders die verantwoordelijk worden gehouden voor wateroverlast. Of gemeentebestuurders die aangeklaagd worden voor dood door schuld bij oversterfte door een hittegolf onder suikerpatiënten, ouderen, zwaarlijvigen en trimmers die ondanks de hitte gaan sporten. Want we weten dat de huidige inrichting van de openbare ruimte niet optimaal is om hittestress in de stedelijke gebieden te voorkomen. De mooiste opmerking vond ik die over steden als ‘intensieve menshouderij’, waarbij de stedelijke gebieden de waterproblemen over de ‘schutting gooien’ naar het (agrarisch) buitengebied. Er wordt door overheden nog redelijk veel op watergebied en stedelijke inrichting en onderhoud ‘verprutst’. Als de burger en de rechter dat tot een misdaad gaan verklaren zullen er heel wat bestuurlijke ‘misdadigers’ in de cel belanden. Gelukkig is de gemiddelde Nederlander iets nuchterder dan de gemiddelde Italiaan. Maar op zich is met het ter verantwoording roepen van bestuurders niets mis.

De netwerkdag NBWB met het thema “Water en Stad”, met onder andere een lezing van Kees van Leeuwen van KWR City Bleuprint. En een verhaal van Peter Glas, watergraaf van waterschap De Dommel die een wel heel bijzondere uitleg gaf over het middenpaneel van het schilderij “Tuin der Lusten” van Jeroen Bosch. Het water in het midden zou de Maas zijn. Het water dat aan de linkerzijde in de Maas stroomt is de Aa. Het water dat aan de rechterzijde in de Maas stroomt is de Dommel. Het provinciehuis staat op de waterbol in het midden. En de lustige activiteiten van de waternimfen vinden plaats in het waterrijke Bossche Broek. In het Jeroen Bosch jaar vind ik dit een prachtige uitleg van een doek dat zich helaas in het Prado te Madrid bevindt.
Wat ik heel leuk vond was de demonstratie van de opblaasbare waterkering bij het Van Abbemuseum, zie hieronder.
