OVER WATER 133: EEN OEVERZWALUWWAND EN DE NKWK CONFERENTIE
Vorige week vrijdag heb ik de ingebruikname bijgewoond van een oeverzwaluwwand aan de oever van de Amertak/Donge te Geertruidenberg. Niet dat getrainde oeverzwaluwen de wand in gebruik namen, maar diverse bij de totstandkoming van de wand betrokken bestuurders en ambtenaren waren uitgenodigd en werden ontvangen op Fort Lunet bij Raamsdonksveer en toegesproken door de initiatiefnemer Peter Verwaters.
Peter Verwaters is de volhouder die, nadat oeverzwaluwen vorig jaar een berg mineralen bij het bedrijf Sibelco in gebruik hadden genomen voor hun nesten, het bedrijf overhaalde de nesten te beschermen en daarna stad en land had bewogen om deze wand te realiseren. Ook ik was benaderd omdat de ideale plek een stukje grond van het waterschap Brabantse Delta was, waar de Amertak de Donge raakt. Ik ben er toen binnen het waterschap achteraan gegaan en beschouw de realisatie als één van de tastbare resultaten van mijn DB lidmaatschap. Ik vond het dan ook leuk voor deze ingebruikname uitgenodigd te zijn.
De locatie is voor de oeverzwaluwen ideaal. Voedsel is er in redelijke overvloed en de wand staat op een rustige, niet voor het publiek toegankelijke, plek. Toch kan het publiek er vanaf een wandelpad aan de andere kant van de Donge straks van genieten. De realisatie van de wand is wat mij betreft een voorbeeld van hoe het moet. Een bedrijf dat een stukje natuur beschermd en overheden die samen met het particulier initiatief iets moois realiseren.
Ik hoop dat mijn eigen gemeente daar een voorbeeld aan neemt. Ook in Bergen op Zoom zijn er tal van plekken waar een dergelijk initiatief een succes kan worden. Langs de Binnenschelde, op de Plaat en zelfs in of nabij het Anton van Duinkerkenpark zijn geschikte locaties te vinden.
Op dinsdag 17 april was de 4e NKWK conferentie ‘van papier naar praktijk’ op de Campus Wageningen University & Research. De NKWK (Nationaal Kennis en innovatieprogramma Water en Klimaat) conferenties zijn voor mij altijd interessant gebleken en ook nu werd ik niet teleurgesteld.
Er waren een aantal sprekers, onder andere de Delta Commissaris Wim Kuijken die een overzicht gaf van de ontwikkelingen, kansen en bedreigingen. Het viel mij op dat bij alle discussies over de klimaatveranderingen en de mogelijke gevolgen, transport door niemand werd vermeld. Terwijl bijvoorbeeld de droogteperiodes zoals in 1976 enorme gevolgen kunnen hebben voor het transport over water op de niet gekanaliseerde delen van de grote rivieren!
Ik bezocht in de morgen de workshop “Naar een klimaatbestendige stad” met een aantal presentaties en discussies. Wat mij trof was dat bij één werkplan, het inschatten en kwantificeren van klimaatschaden, van alles werd benoemd behalve de oversterfte en de economische/financiële gevolgen. Beslismodellen worden ontwikkeld. De deelnemers formuleerden in vijf groepen welke informatie nodig is voor een werkbaar beslismodel.
In de middag bezocht ik de workshop Lumbricus “Bewust omgaan met de bodem is essentieel in waterbeheer“. Een buitengewoon leerzame workshop over bodemproblemen, zoals de bodemverdichting en welke pilots er lopen hoe de bodemverdichting aan te pakken. Van diepwortelaars, zoals sorghum en andere diepwortelende grassen, mechanische bewerkingen tot de herintroductie en kweek van wormen. De zware landbouwmachines, zoals ingezet bij de oogst van rooivruchten, zijn ware moordenaars van het bodemleven. Met revitalisering van de bodem is zowel voor de boer, de natuur als de waterbeheerder een wereld te winnen!
