OVER WATER 132: BIJEN TELLEN EN WATERNIEUWTJES
BIJENTELLING
Volgend weekend organiseert Nederland Zoemt de eerste nationale bijentelling. Iedereen wordt opgeroepen om mee te doen aan dit landelijk onderzoek door in de eigen tuin gedurende een half uur bijen te tellen. De bijentelling wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met EIS kenniscentrum insecten en waarneming.nl.
Het onderzoek wordt gedaan omdat het niet goed gaat met wilde bijen. Ruim de helft van de bijna 360 bijensoorten is bedreigd. Wilde bijen zijn belangrijk voor de voedselvoorziening: 80% van de eetbare gewassen is voor de bestuiving afhankelijk van bijen en andere insecten. Om de bij beter te kunnen helpen, is meer informatie nodig over waar bijen voorkomen en met hoeveel ze zijn.
Doe mee, het is eenvoudig. Eind april kunnen er zo’n 20 verschillende soorten wilde bijen, hommels en zweefvliegen in de tuin vliegen. Om deze soorten te herkennen zijn er verschillende hulpmiddelen, zoals een telformulier met zoekkaart, instructievideo en een uitgebreid bijengidsje ontwikkeld. Al deze materialen zijn te vinden op de website van Nederland Zoemt. Op deze website kunnen deelnemers in het weekend van 21 en 22 april ook direct de resultaten van hun telling invoeren en kan iedereen live de resultaten volgen.
DE NIEUWTJES VAN DEZE WEEK
De afgelopen jaren kwamen veel Chinese ‘waterwerkers’ naar Nederland om te kijken en te leren hoe het waterrijke Nederland omging en bouwde aan het waterbeheer en waterveiligheid. Ik denk dat binnen afzienbare tijd veel waterambtenaren en bestuurders van Nederlandse steden naar China op werkbezoek gaan om te zien hoe China in enkele decennia traditionele steden, waar het grootste deel van de neerslag wordt afgevoerd, ombouwt tot ‘sponssteden’ waar 70 % van de neerslag wordt vastgehouden in de bodem. In 2015 is dit project gestart in 30 steden. Het Nederlandse adviesbureau Arcadis is hierbij betrokken. Meer vocht in de bodem ontlast niet alleen de waterafvoercapaciteit maar bestrijd ook de hittestress. Voor China is de noodzaak tot aanpak van de wateroverlast evident. Naar schatting bedroeg de schade als gevolg van overstromingen in China tussen 2011 en 2014 honderd miljard dollar. In het licht van de klimaatveranderingen de grond gaan gebruiken als natuurlijke spons om overstromingen en wateroverlast te voorkomen zal ook in Nederland en Europa navolging moeten krijgen.
Amsterdam, Nijmegen en Rotterdam hebben met tal van ‘groendaken’ projecten laten zien dat dit soort projecten een wezenlijke bijdrage kunnen leveren aan de ontlasting van het riool. De daken kunnen 32 tot 150 liter regenwater per vierkante meter bergen. Sedumdaken blijken circa 50 euro (inclusief de aanleg) per vierkante meter te kosten. De neveneffecten, buiten waterberging, zijn isolatie, vermindering hittestress, toename biodiversiteit en meer groenbeleving.
Antwerpen is het pilootproject Tuinstraten gestart, waarbij in vijf stadsdistricten geselecteerde straten permanent gaan vergroenen en verblauwen. Het kent een combinatie van doelen: buffering en infiltratie van hemelwater en sociale elementen waarmee getracht wordt de contacten met de bewoners en tussen de bewoners te verbeteren, alsmede bewustwording. Bij een tuinstraat komt/blijft enkel verharding waar het noodzakelijk is, een karrespoor.
Eendjes voeren lijkt misschien onschuldig. Maar algen eten mee en dat heeft een fors effect op de kwaliteit van singels en vijvers. Het gaat volgens Sven Teurlincx van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) niet om een boterhammetje hier en daar. Uit steekproeven blijkt dat er bij sommige vijvers wel zo’n acht kilo brood op een dag in het water belandt. “Dat is een hele bolderkar vol!” De gevolgen: troebel water met zoveel algen “dat je ermee kunt vingerverven”. En is het een vijver met een fonteintje? Dan adem je die algen nog in ook. Dat kan anders. Geen brood in het water en de eendjes op de kant niet zoveel voeren dat het blijft liggen voor de ratten.
