OVER WATER – 150: DE ONTWIKKELINGEN VAN HET WEER IN DE 20E EEUW EN EEN GELEZEN BOEK
2018. Het lijkt een uitzonderlijk weerjaar te worden. Maar is dat ook echt zo? In mijn herinnering wel, maar ik ben pas 70 jaar oud en wat is mijn herinnering waard?
Ter ordening van mijn gedachten hier omtrent heb ik het boek gelezen: “Weer een eeuw”, geschreven/samengesteld door Harry Otten, Jacob Kuiper en Tom van der Speken en uitgegeven door Tirion. Het boek is een rijke bron van informatie over het weer in Nederland van 1900 tot 2000. Als je nu naar het nieuws over de ‘uitzonderlijk’ droge periode van 2018 kijkt, waarbij veel vergeleken wordt met 1976, denk je dat 1976 de maat der dingen is. Qua neerslag 536.3 mm was 1976 het op twee na droogste jaar van de eeuw. 1933 was nummer twee met 510,9 mm. Maar 1921 was pas echt droog met gemiddeld slechts 387.3 mm neerslag. 1976 was met 10,0 graden best een warm jaar, maar niet uitzonderlijk. Warmer waren 1934, 1949, 1959 (het zonnigste jaar: 1986,9 zonuren), 1982, 1983, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 (samen met 1990 was 1999 met gemiddeld 10,9 graden het warmste jaar van de 20e eeuw). Met 1814,4 zon uren was 1976 best zonnig maar niet de echte topper. Geen van de droge maanden in 1976 haalde de top tien droogste maanden van de 20e eeuw, noch de top tien zonnigste maanden van de 20e eeuw. 1976 was de op één na (1947) zonnigste zomer. Wat in het boek wel op valt is de regelmatige stijging van de temperatuur, gemeten in 30 jarige gemiddelden, in de 20e eeuw. Van 9,1 graden in de periode 1901-1930 tot 9,7 graden in de periode 1970-1999. Uit de cijfers blijkt veel onregelmatigheid, maar ook dat de temperatuur in Nederland al meer dan een eeuw onmiskenbaar stijgt.
2018 is een uitzonderlijk jaar, maar past qua temperatuur in een trend, hoe uitzonderlijk is te bezien. We kunnen er wel van leren en moeten ons gaan voorbereiden op hogere temperaturen en meer droogte periodes. Dat zal betekenen meer doen aan hittestress en de verzilting van gronden en wateren bestrijden/voorkomen.
Wij Nederlanders zijn van oorsprong moerasland bewoners. Net als de Dinka in Zuid-Soedan. Ondanks de nattigheid van hun omgeving de moeraslanden langs de Bahr-al-Ghazal hebben de christelijke Dinka een regengebed omdat ze weten dat de goddelijke voorzienigheid ook droge perioden over de mensheid uitstrooit. Misschien, je weet het nooit, kan dit gebed ons ook helpen. Het leert ons in ieder geval wel dat we de regen ook mogen waarderen om de rijkdom die het hemelwater ons schenkt.
