OVER WATER – 157: RESISTENTE BACTERIËN EN OVER BIOPLASTIC
De afgelopen jaren schreef ik een paar keer over resistente bacteriën. In november 2015 het artikel “resistente bacteriën en onze zuiveringen“. In december 2016 over de kennis in dit kader het artikel medicijnresten in onze zuiveringen. En in maart 2018 het artikel “medicijnresten in water: een groeiend probleem“.
De afgelopen week was er over dit onderwerp en over Phario een openbaar debat op de beursvloer van de innovatie expo op het RDM terrein op de Heijplaat te Rotterdam. Ik was door de innovatie manager van het waterschap Brabantse Delta gevraagd om haar te helpen bij het publiek debat. Een beetje als eventuele gangmaker als dat nodig zou zijn. De onderwerpen werden ingeleid door presentaties. Die over resistente bacteriën door een spreekster van Wetsus.
Naar resistente bacteriën wordt steeds meer onderzoek gedaan, maar tot een echte aanpak in onze rioolwaterzuiveringen komt het nog niet. Terwijl in Duitsland en Zwitserland hier wel concrete stappen toe worden gezet. Zoals gebruikelijk is de vraag: wie gaat dat betalen? Ik acht de groeiende gezondheidsrisico’s zodanig dat er nu echt aan de slag moet worden gegaan met de aanpak van bacteriën in onze zuiveringen en in de effluent lozingen. Nu komen er steeds meer resistente bacteriën in het oppervlaktewater terecht. Dus ook in oppervlaktewater dat gebruikt wordt om drinkwater van te maken. De risico’s nemen toe en dat zou moeten betekenen dat met de aanpak haast moet worden gemaakt. Wie het gaat betalen is dan een zaak waar de dames en heren politici desnoods later besluiten over moeten gaan nemen.
Het Phario project (bioplastic uit afvalwater) werd ingeleid door een presentatie van Etteke Wypkema van het waterschap Brabantse Delta. Dit project is toe aan een opschaling naar een industriële aanpak. Dit vraagt de inzet van ondernemers, zowel bij de productie als bij de toepassing van bioplastic. De PHA, die nu op kleine schaal uit afvalwater wordt geproduceerd, kan bruikbaar zijn voor tal van toepassingen. Gezocht wordt naar ondernemers die de uitdaging aannemen en aan de slag willen om te komen tot een meer duurzame samenleving en niet te benauwd zijn met dit soort materialen te werken. Waar zijn de AKZO’s en DSM’s van de wereld die willen gaan voor een echt duurzaam imago. Niet om zich zo’n mooi imago aan te meten maar om echt duurzaam te worden.
