Uit de Haringvlietkrant begrijp ik dat in de droge periode van november 2005 er een zogenaamde achterwaartse verzilting (via Nieuwe Waterweg, de Oude Maas, het Spui en de Dordtsche Kil) heeft plaatsgevonden van het Haringvliet en het Hollandsdiep.
Ruim twee maanden kon het drinkwaterbedrijf Evides geen water innemen.
Deze verzilting is relatief uitzonderlijk. Maar met een stijgende zeespiegel en mogelijk langere perioden van lage rivierafvoeren zou dit vaker op kunnen gaan treden.
Reeds eerder heb ik uitgesproken dat de zoetwatervoorziening van West-Brabant o.a. door de zoet/zout-discussies over het Volkerak/Zoommeer bedreigd kan worden.
Nu viel deze achterwaartse verzilting ver buiten het groeiseizoen. Wanneer dit echter gebeurt in de zomer, kan dit ernstige gevolgen hebben voor onze waterinlaatmogelijkheden.
Het nieuwe beheer van de Haringvlietsluizen doet ook in droge perioden een extra beroep op de beschikbaarheid van zoet water en beperkt eventuele doorspoelmogelijkheden van het Volkerak/Zoommeer ten behoeve van de bestrijding/voorkoming van blauwalgen.
Is het niet tijd om op basis van de huidige kennis en de per mei 2006 bijgestelde klimaatmodellen het zogenoemde Kierbesluit ter discussie te stellen, onder het motto beter ten halve gekeerd dan ten hele gedwaald?
