EEN ANDERE KIJK OP HET VERZILTEN VAN HET VOLKERAK/ZOOMMEER
Als watersportondernemer zie ik dat de voorstanders van verzilting van het Volkerak/Zoommeer (VZM) zich langs alle kanten rijk rekenen en goed zijn in het erbij slepen van papieren voordelen zonder een afweging te maken in de zin van: wat zijn de nadelen?
Als voorbeeld het verhaal dat de waterrecreatie in het gebied van de Steenbergsevliet stagneert. Dat dit aan de waterkwaliteit van het ET VZM zou liggen heeft slechts ten dele enige grond. Dat de boel stagneerde in ons gebied en met name bij onze jachthaven heeft niets te maken met een zout/zoet VZM maar met het feit dat iemand er 35 jaar over moet doen eer er (normale) medewerking gegeven wordt aan vergunningen. Wij zijn de jachthaven begonnen toen het VZM op een vast peil kwam en de sluis open bleef staan. Bereikbaarheid is voor een bedrijf van levensbelang. Het aantal passanten in Steenbergen nam ook toe toen er niet meer geschut behoefde te worden. Dat bereikbaarheid heel belangrijk is blijkt uit het feit dat er nu al ligplaatshouders van ons naar Dintelmond gegaan zijn door het geklungel met het bruggetje op het Benedensas. Als er weer geschut moet gaan worden om op het VZM te komen gaat dit ten koste van de havens die aan de West-Brabantse rivieren liggen, dit tast de rentabiliteit aan. Wij gaan een lagere bieding doen voor de exploitatie van de haven van Steenbergen als het zeker is dat er weer geschut moet gaan worden.
Jachthaven de Schapenput heeft al sinds de aanleg in 1991 een wachtlijst. Dus om onze haven aantrekkelijk te maken hebben wij geen zout VZM nodig, in tegendeel zelfs. Naast het schutten zijn er nog meer voordelen om op zoet water te liggen, een boot (met name stalen boten) heeft minder onderhoud nodig, men kan zijn boot met havenwater wassen (dus niet met drinkwater), men heeft minder last van aangroei van het onderwaterschip en er kan dus geen of minder agressieve antifouling gebruikt worden, zoet water is beter voor de koeling van de motor.
Bovenstaande argumenten zijn allemaal in mijn eigen belang, maar hebben effect op het algemeen belang wat gediend is met meer en blijvende recreanten.
Zoals bekend woon en ken ik al heel mijn leven (vanaf 1949) het Volkerak. Toen in 1969 het Hellegat werd afgesloten met de Volkerakdam werd het water bij vloed en harde wind in ons gebied hoger opgestuwd. Met name de bewoners van Carolinapolder in Dinteloord hebben angstige jaren meegemaakt. Het water stond regelmatig tot aan de kruin van de dijk. In 1975 was het Schelde-Rijkanaal gereed en dat gaf enige verluchting. Veilig waren wij pas in 1987 toen de Philips- en Oesterdam dicht gingen. Er wordt makkelijk gezegd “met de kennis van nu hadden we het nooit zo gedaan”. Laat ik je vertellen: dit wordt alleen maar (na)gezegd door mensen die nooit achter een zeedijk die op knappen staat hebben gewoond.
Vroeger, bij een volledig tij, kon je lekker zwemmen vanaf de zandplaten die volledig onder water kwamen bij vloed. Om er te komen moest je vanaf het Benedensas tot je knieën door de modder lopen om bij de zandplaten te komen. De stukken grond die niet ieder tij onder water kwamen te staan waren begroeid en, zoals altijd met planten en dieren, sterven dingen af en gaan rotten. Dit brengt uiteraard stank met zich mee. Vroeger concentreerde zich dat tegen de zeedijk aan. Daar lagen hele ruggen ‘veek’, zoals men dat toen noemde, en dit veek zette men in de winter op hopen en verbrandde dit in het voorjaar. Ook in zout water komt, naast vis en schelpdieren, allerlei plantengroei tot ontwikkeling zoals klappers, zeesla, zeewier, etc. en ook dit sterft af en gaat rotten. Dat er nu beweerd wordt dat er met een zout VZM schoon zwemwater ‘gegarandeerd’ wordt, vind ik zeer discutabel. Dat de natuur reageert is zeker, maar hoe dat weet niemand. Als men een 100% schoon zwemwater wil moet men in een chloorbad gaan zwemmen!!
Overigens is het water tegenwoordig zo schoon in het VZM dat er heel goed gezwommen kan worden. Het doorzicht (en dat is belangrijk om in te zwemmen) is nog nooit zo goed geweest en ik kan dat weten omdat ik elke maand wel een keer over Volkerak vaar.
Er wordt gepraat over een ‘dode bak water’. Dat is niet waar. Het water is schoon, er zit volop vis en de plantengroei is zo veel dat we er last van krijgen bij de bereikbaarheid van de jachthavens.
De stelling ‘milieu is belangrijker dan natuur’ onderschrijf ik. Hiermee wordt bedoeld dat indien je zorgt voor een goed milieu, dan past de natuur zich aan. Andersom niet en ik neem de vrijheid de volgende uitspraak van Chiel Jacobussen (hoofdecoloog van het Zeeuwslandschap) te citeren en te onderschrijving: “terwijl de beleidsmakers en lobbyisten vergaderden trok de natuur haar eigenplan”.
Velen kennen mij en weten hoe begaan ik ben met het milieu en de natuur en het gebruik hiervan. Ik denk dat ik met dit verhaal argumenten aangedragen heb voor mijn standpunt om het VZM zoet te laten.
Voor het zout maken van het VZM heb ik maar weinig andere echte argumenten gezien dan de blauwalg en die is ondertussen praktisch verdwenen. Al jaren vraag ik “waarom is een zout VZM goed voor de recreatie?” Nu heb ik nog steeds het gevoel dat er een weg ingeslagen is waar men niet meer op terug wil komen. Het heeft iets weg van “tunnelvisie”
Misschien is het een tussenoplossing om het plan 10 jaar in de ijskast te zetten en te kijken wat de natuur doet.
