De zeven veehouderijen op Schiermonnikoog veroorzaken volgens rekenmodellen een stikstofdepositie op het beschermde duinlandschap van 900 tot 2.000 mol per hectare per jaar, afhankelijk van de plek op het eiland. Uit de metingen die sinds 2012 voor het hele duinlandschap worden gedaan blijkt de depositie circa 600 mol per hectare per jaar. De metingen zijn echter niet rechtsgeldig. De berekeningen bepalen wel het beleid. De overheid heeft de veehouders op Schiermonnikoog daarom gevraagd maatregelen te treffen om de stikstofdepositie op het beschermde duingebied terug te dringen.
Sinds 2012 wordt er op zes plekken op het eiland het jaar rond de ammoniakconcentratie vastgesteld door het RIVM. Die bedraagt 2 tot 5 microgram per m3 afhankelijk van de plek op het eiland. Er is weinig onderzoek beschikbaar naar de relatie tussen de gemeten ammoniakconcentraties in de lucht en de stikstofdeposities op de vegetatie. Afgaande op beschikbare onderzoeken in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en van Wageningen UR is becijferd dat de stikstofdepositie op Schiermonnikoog bij deze gemeten concentraties 600 mol per hectare per jaar bedraagt.
Dat het rekenmodel een te hoge stikstofdepositie berekent, zou ook kunnen worden afgeleid uit een botanisch veldbezoek op Schiermonnikoog in de maand mei. Op die plek van het eiland, waarvoor de hoogste stikstofdepositie wordt berekend, ziet het dan paars van de zeer ammoniakgevoelige orchideeën. Ook de zeer ammoniakgevoelige zonnedauw en veenpluis worden dan in grote aantallen aangetroffen. Deze zeer gevoelige plantensoorten verdragen stikstofdeposities tot maximaal 700 mol per hectare per jaar.
Een rekenmodel wordt door de wetgever belangrijker gevonden dan de werkelijkheid. Het gevolg is dat aan zeven boeren eisen worden gesteld die volstrekt onnodig zijn en hen wel belemmeren in hun bedrijfsvoering. Dit laat zien dat Europese wetgeving die de overheid klakkeloos uitvoert Nederlandse boeren soms onnodig belemmert. In Brussel denken ze het beter te weten dan de natuur zelf en worden boeren in de nabijheid van natuurgebieden, zoals op Schiermonnikoog, onnodig belemmerd in hun bedrijfsvoering.
