Als kind was ik al vertrouwd met de dynamiek van de oude Biesbosch, waar ik de estuariene dynamiek aan den lijve heb ervaren. Na de afsluiting van het Haringvliet in 1970 volgde ik de veranderingen van het milieu en het ecosysteem op de voet. Vanaf de oprichting in 1976 van de Vereniging Madese Natuurvrienden, waarvan ik eerst voorzitter en uiteindelijk 25 jaar bestuurslid mocht zijn, richtte ik me vooral op voorlichting en educatie over de Biesbosch. Dit middels het opzetten van de Biesboschgidsencursus, deelname en voorzitterschap van het Natuurbeschermingsplatform Biesbosch, lid van de Gebruikersraad Nationaal Park de Biesbosch, de Werkgroep Biesbosch en tenslotte de Adviesgroep Borm & Huijgens.
Door mijn brede biologische en landschapshistorische interesse groeide al snel het besef dat zowel de natuurlijke processen als ‘de hand van de mens’ in samenhang ons land hebben gevormd en dat water hierin altijd een verbindende rol heeft gespeeld.
Bij water hangt alles met alles samen. Het beleid van het ‘Waterschap Nederland’ is dan ook bepalend voor de waterbeheerplannen van de waterschappen en andersom. Het huidige Deltaprogramma wordt in mijn ogen nog te ad hoc samengesteld en mist een lange termijn visie.
Kennis en inzicht van de natuurlijke processen en waterloopkundige mogelijkheden, die vaak meer aanwezig zijn bij de waterschappen, zijn noodzakelijk om te komen tot landelijke samenhangende planvorming voor een klimaatbestendig Nederland.
Als Adviesgroep Borm & Huijgens zijn wij inmiddels tien jaar actief om te streven voor landelijk integraal waterbeheer en het herstel van estuariene dynamiek in een nieuwe en voortgaande vorm.
