Geachte heer van Peel,
De Nederlandse regering heeft de “ontwerp-rijksstructuurvisie Grevelingen en Volkerak-Zoommeer” vastgesteld en daarmee het voornemen kenbaar gemaakt een beperkt getij terug te brengen in het Volkerak-Zoommeer en deze wateren op termijn te verzilten.
Voor het Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf Antwerpen kan het van belang zijn deze ontwikkelingen te volgen om dat de verzilting van het Volkerak-Zoommeer (de Rijn-Scheldeverbinding) gevolgen kan hebben voor het beheer van de haven van Antwerpen.
Op pagina 134 van de Milieueffectrapport bij de Rijksstructuurvisie (oktober 2014) is te lezen: “Een zout Volkerak-Zoommeer leidt tot hogere zoutgehaltes in de havendokken van Antwerpen en het Antwerps Kanaalpand.” De verzilting van het Antwerps Kanaalpand kan gevolgen hebben voor de scheepvaart en de bescherming van schepen en installaties tegen corrosie. De Rijn-Scheldeverbinding is nu in principe een geheel zoetwatersysteem. Als dat gedeeltelijk zout wordt, vergt dat een andere benadering van de corrosieproblematiek voor bijvoorbeeld de schepen die afwisselend door zoet en zout water varen. Dit gaat fors meer geld aan onderhoud van de schepen vergen. Het overgrote deel van de vrachtschepen, die gebruik maken van het Volkerak-Zoommeer, zijn ontworpen en worden onderhouden voor zoet water.
Als waterpartij die zich keert tegen de verzilting en de desastreuze gevolgen daarvan op de natuur en het economische verkeer tussen Nederland en België hebben wij de vrijheid genomen u op deze ontwikkeling te wijzen.
