GRAVERS IN DIJKEN EN OEVERS
Procambarus clarkii, de rode Amerikaanse rivierkreeft
Als waterschapsbestuurder volg ik al jaren de vakliteratuur als het gaat om de bedreigers van onze dijken en oevers. Van muskusratten en beverratten weten we al heel lang dat ze een bedreiging zijn voor onze dijken en deze overlastdieren worden dan ook al jaren door de muskusrattenbestrijders van onze waterschappen bestreden. Steeds vaker blijken ook de bevers ons als dijk- en oeverbeheerders voor problemen te stellen. Deze dieren zijn beschermd en een paradepaardje van ons en van de natuurliefhebbers dus we proberen met respect voor hen en hun biotoop de dijken en oevers op orde te houden. Ook mollen zijn, zeker na een zachte winter, een probleemsoort die zo nu en dan schade veroorzaakt aan dijken en oevers.
Recent kwam ik op H2O-online een artikel tegen van weer een nieuwe loot: (exotische) rivierkreeften. Een lezenswaardig en verontrustend artikel. Voor het werkgebied van Brabantse Delta zijn een drietal soorten van belang:
- Pacifastacus leniusculus, de Californische rivierkreeft, waargenomen rond Tilburg,
- Procambarus clarkii, de rode Amerikaanse rivierkreeft waargenomen rond Breda en Tilburg en
- Orconectes limosus, gevlekte Amerikaanse rivierkreeft die ook in ons het werkgebied is waargenomen (zoals aangegeven in afbeelding 2 van het artikel).
Op basis van Nederlandse waarnemingen is graafgedrag bekend van twee van de drie hier bovenvermelde soorten. Te weten: de rode en gevlekte Amerikaanse rivierkreeft. Zij maken gangenstelsels in de oevers. Het gegraaf zorgt voor extra baggeraanwas en ondermijnt waterkeringen en oevers. Het wordt tijd dat deze beestjes op de menukaart komen van ons mensen en van liefhebbers van kreeftenvlees in de natuur. Anders gaan ze, als hun verspreiding door gaat, uiteindelijk voor meer werk en kosten voor de waterschappen zorgen.

In de middag de presentatie van de film over de (oud)bewoners van de Overdiepse Polder. De bijeenkomst was een soort van afsluitende bijeenkomst, waarin centraal stond een meer dan een uur durende film/documentaire waarin (oud)bewoners van de Overdiepse Polder terug kijken op de periode van het project. Ze gaven onverbloemd en met een lach en een traan hun mening over hoe zaken waren gelopen, hoe het beter/anders had gekund en wat de gevolgen zijn van het project op hun onderlinge relaties. Het project heeft meer veiligheid opgeleverd voor circa 4 miljoen mensen en een bijdrage geleverd aan de toekomst van een aantal gezinnen en bedrijven en ook een landschap opgeleverd dat in de toekomst gewaardeerd zal gaan worden. Maar de gevolgen op de onderlinge relaties zijn soms groter dan door bestuurders gerealiseerd wordt. Ik hoop dat de film, en hoe de bewoners die aan het woord kwamen hun pijn en vreugde lieten zien, behulpzaam kan zijn om de ontstane kloven tussen mensen weer te helen.
In de avond de waterschapskring voor agrariërs in de werkplaats te Raamsdonksveer. Deze bijeenkomst stond in het teken van samenwerken, betrokkenheid en van elkaar leren en weten wat er speelt in West-Brabant. Tijdens de Waterschapskringen wil het dagelijks bestuur van waterschap Brabantse Delta graag van gedachten wisselen over ontwikkelingen die voor de ingelanden en bedrijven van belang kunnen zijn en hoe het waterschap daarin ondersteunend kan zijn. Ik mocht er vele vragen beantwoorden.

Het bestuurlijk overleg van werkeenheid 4 waarin wethouders van de gemeenten Werkendam, Woudrichem, Aalburg, Oosterhout, Geertruidenberg en Drimmelen samen met de twee DB leden van de waterschappen Brabantse Delta en Rivierenland het programma bespreken en vaststellen voor 2016. Van de vele op te pakken onderwerpen, ben ik vooral blij met het ontwikkelen van een visie op klimaatadaptatie. Een visie die straks vast ook gebruikt kan gaan worden in andere werkeenheden. De lokatie Biesbosch Museum Eiland en de directie omgeving vond ik inspirerend. Een locatie die een bezoek meer dan waard is, zie onderstaande foto’s.
