Recent heb ik gelezen “Tonnagie op de Zeeuwse Stromen” geschreven door Ad van der Weel, Uitgegeven door Rijkswaterstaat Directie Zeeland omstreeks 2002. Het boek gaat over de geschiedenis van de betonning van de Zeeuwse Wateren, betonningsstelsels, betonningsmaterialen (boeien en bakens), betonningsvaarschepen, plaatsingspalen, onderhoud, storingen etc. en bevat tal van foto’s, kaartjes en illustraties. Hoewel het boek enigszins gedateerd is, geeft het een prachtig overzicht van de geschiedenis van betonningen en de organisatie van deze vorm van geleiding en bescherming van de scheepvaart.
“Het Groene Kleed, Toekomst voor de Nederlandse natuur”. Een boek uitgegeven in 1995 en geschreven door Jan van Gelderen met foto’s van Fred Hazelhoff. De eerste zin luidt: “De beloften van een verrommeld land.” Een kritisch boek met hoop voor de toekomst. Het is aardig om nu, 23 jaar na de uitgifte, te kijken of en hoe de plannen van toen vorm zijn geven. Mijn conclusie? Er is best veel gebeurd. Toch lijkt het deels dweilen met de kraan open.
“Water, drie culturen zoekend naar evenwicht”. Een boek uitgegeven in 1994 door SDU en geschreven door Bas Vereecken, met foto’s van Reinout van den Bergh en een bewogen voorwoord door Boutros Boutros-Ghali de toenmalige Secretaris-Generaal van de verenigde Naties. “Water” brengt drie culturen in beeld die alle drie strijd leveren met het water, in een poging met dat water in harmonie te leven. De Tukano indianen in het Amazone gebied rond de grens van Brazilië en Colombia. Een waterrijk gebied dat toen en nu bedreigd wordt doordat goudzoekers het ‘water’ van hun rivieren vervuilen met olie en kwik. De provincie Noord-Holland waar alles rond het ‘water’ perfect georganiseerd lijkt en goed drinkwater vanzelfsprekend lijkt en toch een strijd om de kwaliteit van drinkwater en oppervlaktewater steeds nodig blijft. En de Jemenieten die leven in een woestijnachtige omgeving waar de watervoorraden toen en nu schaars zijn. En de strijd, mede om dat water, anno 2018 met bommen en granaten wordt gevoerd. Het “Water” laat zien dat culturen afhankelijk zijn van water. Water is een rode draad in de ontwikkeling van deze drie culturen en vermoedelijk van alle culturen.
