OVER WATER – 138: RISICO’S VAN WATER OP STRAAT

Enkele voorbeelden van de gezondheidseffecten: vervuild straatwater op de huid gaf een 6,7 keer meer kans op huidklachten, ingeademd vervuild straatwater gaf 2,75 keer meer kans op luchtwegklachten (hoesten, keelpijn, verkoudheid), vervuild straatwater in de mond 4,4 keer meer darmklachten (diarree en overgeven). Contact met het straatwater veroorzaakt dus een groter risico op gezondheidsklachten. Volgens het Sanitas onderzoek zijn de gezondheidsrisico’s 3 tot 7 keer zo hoog vergeleken met mensen die binnen blijven. Gemeenten zouden burgers goed moeten voorlichten over de risico’s van water op straat bij zware regenbuien. Zeker waar kinderen spelen moeten de risico’s zo klein mogelijk gehouden worden, regels voor het opruimen van hondenpoep en de handhaving daarvan kunnen daarbij behulpzaam zijn. Hier ligt dus een taak voor de gemeenten.
