OVER WATER – 155: GELEZEN LOKALE/REGIONALE BOEKEN OVER WATER
Het boekje “Beken in Brabant” uitgegeven in 1976/1977 door de BMF. Het boekje beschrijft 232 beken in Noord-Brabant en wat voor moois aan planten en dieren daar allemaal te vinden was. Het boekje is uitgegeven in een periode dat het ‘normaliseren’ van rivieren en beken nog hoog op de agenda stond van de waterschappen. Zo ook van de Oude Leij bij Goirle. Omdat ik als portefeuillehouder jarenlang betrokken ben geweest om de Oude Leij, stukje bij beetje, weer te laten meanderen en terug te brengen naar zijn oude natuurlijke staat, werd ik getroffen door een protestgedicht in dit boekje van de BMF. Een protest dat zich met veel gevoel voor wat werkelijk belangrijk is voor de natuur en de mens opriep tot verzet tegen de normalisatie van toen. De dichter had gewoon gelijk! Het gedicht, eerder op 28 april 1976 gepubliceerd in Goirles Belang, wil ik de lezer van nu niet onthouden. Het is een galmende echo uit het verleden, die bestuurders van nu aan het denken moeten zetten. Luisteren naar betrokken burgers kan echt iets toevoegen. Als er toen beter geluisterd was naar de dichter van dit gedicht, was er veel geld bespaard en prachtige natuur behouden gebleven.

Bij navraag is gebleken dat VABO de in 1996 overleden Wim van Boxtel was. Helaas heeft hij niet mogen mee maken dat de “moordenéérs” van zijn Oude Leij tot inkeer zijn gekomen en het herstel is gestart. Er is nog herstelwerk te doen. Maar als iedereen wil kan, in goede samenwerking tussen de gemeenten Goirle en Tilburg en het waterschap Brabantse Delta, de gehele Oude Leij hersteld worden. VABO zou dan tevreden kunnen zijn.
- Het boekje “Herdenking Watersnood 1953-2003”, uitgeven door de Stichting Heemkunde Moerdijk. Het boekje bevat veel foto’s en persoonlijke verhalen van de watersnood van Karel van der Burgh, L.J.J. Visseren-Zwaanshoek, Gom van Geel, To van Leest, Koosje Kortsmit, C.M. Kortsmit en Mina Weda. De persoonlijk verhalen geven een bijzondere inkijk wat de watersnoodramp voor betekenis heeft gehad op het leven van gewone mensen.
- “Tussen Haringvliet en Grevelingen”. Een uitgifte in 2004 van de Vereniging voor Natuur – en Landschapsbescherming Goeree-Overflakkee ter gelegenheid van het 25 jarig jubileum. Het is een echt vogelboek. Andere natuur komt slechts zijdelings aan bod. De inhoud van het hoofdstuk over de Krammerse Slikken zal voor de bezoeker aan het Volkerak heel herkenbaar overkomen. Mijn beleving/waarneming van de slikken aan onze kant van het Volkerak zijn soortgelijk. Voor de vogelliefhebbers een boek om te hebben.
- “Suiker plakt”. Een uitgifte in 1994 ter gelegenheid van het 75 jarig bestaan van CSM Suiker.
Ik heb vijf jaar (1965/1970) gewerkt op het proefbedrijf van de zaadkwekerij ‘van der Have’ in de Frederikapolder te Rilland. In het najaar bepaalde ik aan duizenden monsters van bieten, afkomstige van de proefvelden, het gehalte aan suiker, kalium, natrium en stikstof. Ik heb dus wel iets met suiker. Ik moet tot op de dag van vandaag dan ook niets hebben van kunstmatige zoetstoffen. Er gaat niets boven het echte spul: suiker! Het boek is voor mij als Bergenaar en West-Brabander een plezier om te lezen. De Bibliografie begint met “Asselbergs, C.J. e.a., Suikerfabriek-suikerraffinaderij “Wittouck” 1872-1952. Maar ook het besef dat er in 1870 in Nederland 22 suikerfabrieken stonden, waarvan maar liefs 16 in West-Brabant. Het boek laat zien dat West-Brabant het ‘echte’ centrum is van de Nederlandse suikerwereld. Een prachtig boek met veel stoere stemmige bruine foto’s van vooral een mannenwereld.
