OVER WATER – 154: GELEZEN
“Het bedwongen bos” met als subtitel “Nederlanders & hun natuur”, geschreven door Dik van der Meulen, uitgegeven in 2009 door uitgeverij SUN. “Het bedwongen bos” gaat over de opzienbarende veranderingen in het doen en denken van de Nederlanders. Het boek geeft een prachtige inkijk in ons denken en doen over en met de bossen in onze omgeving. Het meest sprak mij hoofdstuk 5 “het polderbos” aan. Niet alleen omdat het Mastbos een paar keer in de tekst voorbij komt, maar ook vanwege een enkel Duits gezegde in het boek, wat alles zegt:

Reeds in 1898 publiceerde A.J. van Schermbeek een boek “Het bosch” waarin hij pleitte voor de aanleg van gemengde bossen, waar de natuur zichzelf regelde. In 1889 begon hij als bosbouwer in de domeinbossen bij Breda en creëerde daar een rendabele houtvesterij door zijn theorie over de ontwikkeling van gezonde gemengde bossen in praktijk te brengen. Helaas pas 120 jaar later komt er provinciaal beleid om middels verloving van de bossen in Noord-Brabant de weerbaarheid van de bossen te verbeteren.
In “Het bedwongen bos” is het volgende citaat uit “Het bosch” opgenomen: “Een ieder die zich met het Nederlandsche bosch bezig houdt moet doordrongen zijn van de noodzakelijkheid in het boschbedrijf zooveel mogelijk de natuurkracht te laten werken, dan alleen zal aan voortduring van het bedrijf te denken zijn; terwijl elke moedwillige verkrachting van de natuur straffend op het bedrijf zelf terugwerkt.”. Immers in een goed verpleegd hakhoutbos is alles in evenwicht, was de boodschap. Ik raad iedereen die iets met het beheer van onze bossen te maken heeft “Het bedwongen bos” te (her)lezen.
Soms kom je geheel onverwachts een waterparel tegen in een stapel oude boeken, die voor de boekenmarkt van de protestante kerk bestemd was. “Water belang in Ossendrecht”, geschreven door P.J. van den Bussche, tot stand gekomen onder verantwoordelijkheid van heemkundekring “Het Zuiderkwartier“. Het boekwerk behandelt het waterbeheer, (drink)waterwinning en (drink)watervoorziening in de delen van wat nu de gemeente Woensdrecht is. De kaarten, de informatie en foto’s bieden veel waterbeelden over wat we nu duiden als de Brabantse Wal.
Een ander boek dat ik met veel plezier gelezen heb is “Douane te water”, “de geschiedenis van een vergeten dienst”, samengesteld door Geert Nieman en Anne-Marieke van Schaik, in 2006 uitgegeven door Barjesteh van Waalwijk van Doorn & Co’s. Het was leuk te lezen dat van 1876 tot 1887 Willemstad in het werkgebied van het waterschap Brabantse Delta de thuishaven was van een zeilvaartuig dat in dienst van de douane de Zuid-Hollandse en Zeeuwse Stromen bevoer ter bestrijding van illegale praktijken en ter vulling van de rijkskassen.
