OVER WATER – 171: ‘GELE VESTJES’
De waterschapsverkiezingen komen er aan. Dat was zelfs te merken op de nieuwjaarbijeenkomst van het waterschap Brabantse Delta. De nieuwe secretaris/directeur hield een inspirerend betoog met een vooruitblik naar het jaar 2019. Hierin zat zelfs een ontkleedpartijfase, waarbij het even leek of er een invasie was van de gele hesjes. Het bleken enthousiaste waterschapmedewerkers met op hun ‘gele vestjes’ inspirerende ideeën om de opkomst voor de verkiezingen te verbeteren.
Zand/Olivijn (Een andere oplossing voor het CO2 vraagstuk)
In de boekenbijlage van het economiekatern van de NRC van zaterdag 9 september 2018 stond een artikel met de kop; “De moderne wereld is gebouwd op zand. En nu raakt het op”. Met als subtitel: “Beton, microchips, glas: onze samenleving is ondenkbaar zonder zand. Maar het wordt schaarser en er worden zelfs mensen om vermoord.” Het artikel laat zien dat er vele soorten zand zijn met vele toepassingen. Met zand van een specifieke korrel grote en vorm worden steden van beton gebouwd.
Vince Beiser heeft het boek “The World in a Grain: The Story of Sand and How It Transformed Civilization” geschreven. Met tal van oplossingen om tot een meer duurzame zandwinning en gebruik van zand te komen.
In Over Water 152 schreef ik over andere manieren om het CO2 probleem aan te pakken. “Bijvoorbeeld het gebruik van het mineraal olivijn, een magnesium-ijzersilicaat. Olivijn reageert snel met het CO2 in de atmosfeer. De eindproducten van de reactie zijn, afhankelijk van de samenstelling van het olivijn, magnesiumcarbonaat, siliciumoxide (zand) en ijzeroxide. Door op grote schaal olivijn te vermalen en het maalsel uit te strooien, bijvoorbeeld op onze stranden, wordt CO2 uit de lucht gehaald. De opbrengst van de CO2 heffing zou gebruikt kunnen worden om effectief en op grote schaal CO2 uit de lucht te halen door olivijn te vermalen en uit te strooien. We kunnen er onze kustverdediging mee versterken of gronden ophogen en tegelijkertijd de CO2 reductie doelstellingen van Parijs halen.” Misschien is hier een combinatie mogelijk. Te starten met onderzoek hoe olivijn zodanig te vermalen tot specificaties dat het na de reactie met CO2 uit de atmosfeer te gebruiken is in toepassingen waar nu het steeds zeldzamere zand in wordt gebruikt. Van ophogen van gronden, beton, tot het bouwrijp maken en zandsuppleties van stranden en het ophogen van dijken.
