“MOEDER NATUUR VERSTERKT DE KUST”, kopte Trouw op 25 januari 2021 over (tijdelijke) landinwaartse zeedijkverschuiving als klimaatbestendige, kustversterkende oplossing; dit was voorgesteld door Het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ). Het artikel gaat evenwel helemaal niet over kustversterking, maar gaat om ophoging van polders langs de “kust”, met name langs de Westerschelde. De wijze waarop is verre van efficiënt en brengt grote schade toe aan de zeedijk, die later weer dienst moet doen en toch op hoogte moet worden gehouden om niet steeds vaker overstroomd te kunnen worden.
Wat erger is: het plan kent een dubbele moraal, overigens naast de vele onjuistheden in het artikel. Uitgangspunt blijkt te zijn om de noodzakelijke verkorting van de kustlijn te voorkomen om de ZOUTE milieus binnen ons land te handhaven, te versterken en uit te breiden. Mensen kunnen alleen maar leven in een zoet milieu. Men gaat van de veronderstelling uit dat we land te veel hebben en zout milieu te weinig. Maar wil men de “kust” langs de getijwateren binnen ons land echt versterken om de zeedijken minder snel te hoeven verhogen, dan moet men een lage dijk juist voor de zeedijk leggen. En inderdaad dan zandt en slibt het tussen die twee dijken op. Het voorland komt hoger te liggen en de golfoploop van de zeedijk wordt minder, zoals bij no.1 langs de Zeeuws-Vlaamse kust.
Het gaat ook niet om wisselpolders. Met wisselpolders wordt bedoeld, dat de landbouwer zijn land al dan niet tijdelijk inwisselt voor andere grond, “b.v. een stuk oude poldergrond in het Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe”. Als die polder dan op voldoende hoogte is gekomen, kan geruild ofwel gewisseld worden met een volgende polder enz. Men is dan erg lang bezig, als zo’n cyclus per polder 50 jaar zou duren. Het is ook van belang dat landbouwers gegarandeerde zekerheid over hun land krijgen. Gezien het artikel is dat niet de bedoeling.
Hoogst merkwaardig is, dat men veronderstelt dat het slib via de haven van Antwerpen vanuit België naar de Westerschelde komt. Dat is niet zo. Het slib komt van voor de Belgische kust via de Wielingen de Westerschelde op en bezinkt uiteindelijk in de Antwerpse haven. Dat komt omdat de bodem van de Westerschelde onnatuurlijk diep gebaggerd is.
Niet overal langs de zeedijken van de Westerschelde komt evenveel slib langs. Bovendien wil men liefst eerst de diepst liggende polders ophogen, maar wel zonder de zeedijk tijdelijk niet te laten functioneren. Die polders liggen aan de Zuid-Bevelandse zijde.
Het NIOZ was juist groot voorstander om niet alleen de hooggelegen polders, zoals de Hedwigepolder, Perkpolder en de Oud-Breskenspolder te ontpolderen, maar ook tegen de natuur in af te graven. Men is kennelijk bij het NIOZ bekeerd tot ophoging van de poldergronden. Dan kunnen we al beginnen met Waterdunen, waar schandalig veel is afgegraven en alvast de diepe drempel in de monding van de baai van Perkpolder op te hogen tot een lage dijk en stoppen met het inrichtingsplan Hedwigepolder. Ophogen van die aanliggende polders kan veel beter met behoud van de bestaande infrastructuur.
We moeten stoppen met de propaganda over zilte teelten op het land als oplossing. Men is al decennia lang bezig met proeven en het wil maar niet lukken om daar maar enige productie in te krijgen, omdat die planten heel veel aandacht behoeven en gevoelig zijn voor een bepaalde range van lichte zoutgehaltes. De oude culturen zijn er aan ten onder gegaan.
Kustverkorting blijft de beste oplossingsrichting in deze klimaatdiscussie!
