Steden en dorpen verharden. Gemeenten en veel mensen kiezen vaak voor weinig onderhoud en bestraten hun achtertuinen en maken van hun voortuin een parkeerplek die altijd vrij is. Ook gemeentelijke plantsoenen zijn de afgelopen jaren omgetoverd tot grasvlakten en perken met weinig onderhoud. Gevolg: afwateringsproblemen en verschraling van de biodiversiteit. Steeds minder insecten, steeds minder vogels en vleermuizen die de insecten eten. Het kan en moet anders.
Eén van de mogelijkheden om dat anders te doen, kan zijn het vergroenen van de boomspiegels. De boomspiegel, de vaak zanderige grond rondom een boom, is een perfecte plek om de stad of uw dorp te vergroenen. Stichting Guerrilla Gardeners lanceert daarom in samenwerking met de Stichting Steenbreek in 2021 de Nationale Dag van de Boomspiegel. Beide organisaties hebben de handen ineengeslagen om de boomspiegel op de kaart te zetten met als doel voor 2030 een miljoen groene boomspiegels te realiseren. Dat doen ze in het najaar, het ‘vergeten tuinseizoen’. Dan is de grond nog warm en vochtig, hebben planten mooi de tijd om te wortelen en het is de ideale tijd om bollen te planten.
Guerrilla Gardeners wachten niet af tot ‘de overheid’ of ‘de bedrijven’ komen met een oplossing. Het zijn bewoners van wijken overal in het land met de focus op wat je wél kunt doen voor biodiversiteit. Gewoon vlak buiten de eigen voordeur. Een voorbeeld in Bergen op Zoom is Bea Demmers. Zonder het zelf te beseffen is zij een Guerrilla Gardener die voor haar eigen voordeur een klein bijen- en insectenparadijsje heeft gecreëerd (zie foto).
De Guerrilla Gardeners zien boomspiegels als een ideale plek om aan te pakken. Ieder plantje op zo’n kale plek draagt direct bij aan de biodiversiteit. Vanwege de locatie op straat en/of in de stoep is het beplanten heel goed samen met straatgenoten op te pakken, wat op een natuurlijke wijze leidt tot ontmoetingen en contacten. Samen oases in een boomspiegel aanleggen zorgt ervoor dat bewoners meer betrokkenheid voelen bij hun wijk.
Gemeenten kunnen partner worden bij dit project. Het aanbod aan gemeenten bestaat uit diverse standaardpakketten (small, medium en large) met een oplopende mate van ondersteuning. Het small pakket is gratis. Van diverse grote gemeenten is al bekend dat ze bij deze dag willen aanhaken. Gaat Bergen op Zoom of uw gemeente ook aanhaken?
