Het is een periode met zware buien en als we de geleerden mogen geloven, worden het er de komende tientallen jaren steeds meer. Die twee constateringen betekenen dat de omliggende natuur van die riool-overstorten steeds vaker belast wordt met afvalstoffen uit onze (menselijke) samenleving. Mijn verwachting is dat het zelfreinigend vermogen van de natuur het steeds vaker niet meer aankan en als biotoop zal gaan verarmen door een overbelasting van bijvoorbeeld voedingsstoffen (nutrieten). Overheden zoals gemeenten zouden meer N- (stikstof) en P- (fosfaat) bindende planten (helofyten) moeten planten in oppervlaktewateren die rioolwater uit overstorten bergen. Die helofytenfilters verbeteren de waterkwaliteit en kunnen ook een toevoeging en verbetering zijn van de biotoop van het water in de nabijheid van de overstort, waarmee bijvoorbeeld ook het bloeien van blauwalgen kan worden voorkomen of beperkt. Ook Bergen op Zoom kent oppervlaktewateren met riool-overstorten waarbij N- en P- bindende planten een positieve rol kunnen spelen. Dat soort rietvelden en rietranden kunnen ook mooi zijn en broedplaatsen bieden voor watervogels. Het wordt tijd voor anders kijken en ander beleid.
