Duurzaamheid kent vele vormen. Als je als gemeente werkelijk ‘duurzaam’ wilt gaan werken, moet je bij alles wat je doet of wilt gaan doen denken: hoe kan dit duurzamer? Welk probleem je ook wilt aanpakken, je moet dan kijken naar hoe je met materialen ‘dichter bij huis’ je doelstellingen kan verwezenlijken.
Je kan als gemeente denken “dat zoeken de regelgevers in Den Haag en Brussel maar uit”. Je kan echter ook denken “wat kunnen wij zelf eraan doen?”. Amsterdam doet een proef waarbij de gemeente begint met het planten van een speciale kamperfoelie die de luchtkwaliteit langs de A10 bij de Zuidas kan verbeteren. De plant is extra harig en is speciaal voor het zuiveren van fijnstof gekweekt. Het gaat om een project dat een onderzoeksbudget heeft gekregen van het nieuwe Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Studies.
De Provincie Noord-Brabant is in september gestart met een pilot ‘vergroenen’ van geluidsschermen. De provincie wil testen of het planten van een speciale kamperfoeliesoort tegen geluidsschermen bijdraagt aan een afname van fijnstof langs de weg. Twee voorbeelden van de aanpak van fijnstof.
Daar ben ik blij mee want ook uit oogpunt van biodiversiteit, klimaatadaptatie en goed waterbeheer is met vergroening van geluidschermen milieuwinst te halen. Maar als men in Brabant en Bergen op Zoom met vergroening van betonnen geluidschermen aan de slag gaat, zou ik ook graag zien dat men met het beton zelf aan de slag gaat en niet wacht tot dat anderen dit doen. Ook andere bomen, heesters, mossen en vetplanten hebben de eigenschap dat ze fijnstof uit de lucht vangen en vasthouden. Het fijnstof spoelt daarna bij een regenbui van de planten af en komt zo op de grond terecht. In de bodem wordt het fijnstof dan door micro-organismen afgebroken. Duurzaam is hier: op een andere manier meer integraal naar zaken kijken. Laat ook de afdelingen openbare ruimten/groenvoorzieningen meedenken in oplossingen voor problemen van de gemeente.
