Er is ook goed nieuws te melden. Soms kom je iets tegen dat hoop geeft voor de wereld. Een wereld die moet vergroenen om te koelen. Goed nieuws, in mijn ogen, is het idee van Land Life Company. Een Nederlandse onderneming die een idee heeft waarmee jonge bomen door hun eerste jaar heen geholpen worden met bescherming en een éénmalige watergift. Nieuwsgierig? Het Living Planet Report “Zoute en zilte natuur in Nederland” van de WWF. Het eerste wat opvalt? Geen pleidooi om het Volkerak-Zoommeer te verzilten! Wel om de het getij terug te brengen op de Grevelingen en het Haringvliet verder te verzilten. En het besef dat het water een steeds grotere bedreiging vormt, mooi weergegeven door een paar dichtregels van Hendrik Marsman (1936):
en in alle gewesten
wordt de stem van het water
met zijn eeuwige rampen
gevreesd en gehoord.
En verder een goede omschrijving welke mooie en te beschermen zoute en zilte natuur onze delta te bieden heeft.
Goed nieuws
Onder het kopje: “Veel glasaal op Tholen” was deze week in het tijdschrift van het waterschap Scheldestromen te lezen dat bij het gemaal De Noord bij Scherpenisse bij een telling uitzonderlijk veel glasaaltjes werden geteld: 270 stuks! Terwijl 10 gebruikelijk was. Nu maakt één zwaluw nog geen zomer. Maar 27 keer het gebruikelijke aantal geeft deze waterschapper moed en het vertrouwen dat het met de paling in dit kikkerlandje eindelijk weer de goede kant op gaat.

In de morgen overleg met wethouder Kevin van Oort van de gemeente Geertruidenberg onder andere over de dijkversterking Geertruidenberg/Amertak en over de positie van de gemeente inzake een mogelijke verandering van een afslag van de A59 en de effecten/mogelijkheden daarvan op de waterkeringen ter plaatse.
In de middag een bijeenkomst van het bestuurlijk kwartet met het regieteam Hart van Brabant in het raadhuis van de gemeente Oisterwijk met onder andere de agendapunten: de concept evaluatie 2017, de eerste opzet van het jaarplan 2018, de voortgang van het project klimaatadaptatie, het aanhaken van Brabant Water en de afvaardiging van de gemeente in RBOM.

Vandaag een bijeenkomst in het waterschapshuis te Amersfoort met de titel “Glastuinbouw: beleid en praktijk”. Ik verving daar collega Kees de Jong. Het was een gecombineerde bijeenkomst van leden van de uniecommissies CWE en CWS. Het viel mij gelijk op dat van de 17 aanwezigen er 7 vrouw waren. Ik heb natuurlijk vooral ervaring met de commissie CWK waarin van de ruim 20 leden er slechts één vrouw is (de voorzitster). Waarom is de commissie waterkeringen zo veel minder aantrekkelijk voor vrouwen dan de commissie emissies of de commissie watersystemen?
Per 1 januari 2018 wordt de zuiveringsplicht voor glastuinbouwbedrijven ingevoerd met de taak tenminste 95 % van de gewasbeschermingsmiddelen uit het te lozen afvalwater te halen. Het ultieme doel is om in 2027 de emissies naar het oppervlakte water tot ‘nagenoeg nul’ te hebben gereduceerd. In de discussie werd helder dat er voor de groente- en fruittelers een markt motivatie is om geen tot bijna geen gewasbeschermingsmiddelen te gebruiken de AH’s, de Jumbo’s en de Lidl’s van deze wereld stellen immers steeds meer eisen ten aanzien van de voedselveiligheid. Tot op heden is dat niet het geval bij de afnemers van bloemen en planten. Bij de handhaving en stimulering van beperking van het middelengebruik ligt er een taak voor de waterschappen en de gemeenten. Er werd ook stilgestaan bij de teruggang van het insectenbestand en welke rol, in de huidige discussie, hieromtrent de waterschappen zou kunnen passen. Voorbij kwamen natuurlijk de bijen, maar ook typische waterinsecten als libellen zoals de waterjuffer. Voor mij huiswerk om eens te kijken wat ons waterschap hier bij kan of zou moeten.

De kortste dag van het jaar was mijn laatste als lid van het dagelijks bestuur van het waterschap Brabantse Delta. Ik blijf wel lid van het algemeen bestuur dus echt afscheid nemen doe ik niet.
In de ochtend de 2e ontwikkeldag van de RRO Hart van Brabant in de Villa De 4 jaargetijden in Tilburg. In een mooie stadsvilla in hartje Tilburg de laatste vergadering hebben als DB lid met veel van de wethouders en twee gedeputeerden waarmee ik in deze bestuursperiode te maken heb gehad, is een mooie afsluiting van een boeiende periode in mijn bestuurlijk leven. Prominent op de agenda stonden: de ontwikkelingen in het Hart van Brabantgebied op het vlak van mobiliteit en ruimtegebruik en de gebiedsopgaves A58 en N261/N269 waarbij ik de waterbelangen onder de aandacht mocht brengen.
In de middag bezocht ik voor de laatste maal het eindejaarsfeest van het waterschap.
