Dit probleem moet niet verder opgeblazen worden dan het is. Het heeft niets uitstaande met het begrip ‘reanimatie van het meer’. Er zijn andere wensen in het spel. Allereerst is het goed, dat er een nadere analyse komt over de handhaafbaarheid van de Natura2000 aanwijzing van het kunstmatige Grevelingenmeer, een regionaal aquarium. De plannen voor de nieuwe sluis en de Flakkeese spuisluis zijn in strijd met de beginselen van Natura-2000. Ze brengen grote veranderingen aan in de situatie na de aanwijzing in 2013. Een aanwijzing voor een recent bestaand meer, 40 jaar, is op zich al niet logisch. Het moet zich als natuur van groot Europees belang bewezen hebben. Gedurende die periode is het beleid t.a.v. het beheer van het meer verschillende malen ingrijpend veranderd: de realisatie van de Brouwerssluis en de winter- resp. voljaarsopening van de sluis. Men was volledig vertrouwd geraakt met het fenomeen van het optreden van een zuurstofloze onderlaag, een natuurlijke eigenschap van dit meer. Een eigen bekende natuurvorm met een eigen nuttige functie, maar voor die enkele recreatieduiker, die daar speciaal naar toe wil, niet aaibaar. Dat is geen natuurbelang. In de natuur hoort aaibaar en niet aaibaar bij elkaar. Het is inclusief. Met de ervaring, die met het meer was opgedaan, is het meer zoals het functioneerde aanvaard. De ‘waarde’ werd door onze natuurambtenaren zo hogelijk gewaardeerd, dat men er een Europees belang van maakte door de aanwijzing Natura-2000. Men was zich zeer bewust, dat de doelstelling van een zoet meer geblokkeerd werd. Dan moet men dat ook zo in zijn waarde laten. Om daar nu zeer kostbare forse veranderingen in aan te brengen om andere biologische wensen te verwezenlijken, is hiermee in strijd en salami tactiek. Het is nu een vorm van elitair handelen geworden. Aan die aanwijzing zijn doelstellingen toegevoegd in de vorm van habitats en streefaantallen voor bepaalde soorten watervogels. Het is de vraag of die aangeven wat de soortenrijkdom was die voorkwam, of een streven om het nog veel mooier te maken dan dat de natuur zelf heeft bewezen wat natuurlijk is. Laat de natuur dat nu lekker zelf bepalen. Geen menselijk gedram. De hele Natura-2000 aanwijzing blijkt te wringen en wordt te pas en te onpas gebruikt. Het is de hoogste tijd om de oneigenlijke aanwijzing ongedaan te maken. Dan kunnen het eigenbelang van de zoutlobby en het algemeen belang beter afgewogen worden. Voorts is er de kaderrichtlijn water met een eigen toepassing voor dit meer. Wat mensen voelen al een waterkwaliteitsprobleem, krijgt zo zijn eigen juridische dynamiek. Ook dit botst met de instandhoudingdoelstelling van Natura-2000.
