Een op straat weggegooide peuk begin aan een leven vol verderf. In Nederland wordt jaarlijks circa tien miljoen kilo sigarettenpeuken op straat of in het groen weggegooid, waarvan circa 80 % wordt opgeruimd. Circa twee miljoen kilo verdwijnt dan in het riool waarvan een groot deel ongezuiverd in het oppervlaktewater terecht komt. Immers veel straatriolen (in een gescheiden rioolstelsel) voeren niet af naar een rioolzuiveringsinstallatie maar naar sloten, grachten, vaarten, kanalen, vijvers, vennen, beken en rivieren in de buurt.
De giftstoffen in een peuk tasten de water- en bodemkwaliteit aan en daarmee ook de biodiversiteit. Europese regelgeving bepaalt dat de tabaksfabrikanten moeten gaan betalen voor de opruimkosten. Peuken of de microplastics waarin ze uiteen zijn gevallen worden door vogels en vissen soms aangezien voor voedsel. In dit geval kunnen ze daaraan dood gaan.
Dat kan en moet anders! Besef dat peuken afval zijn en peuken NIET op straat, in een rioolput of in de natuur thuis horen. Peuken zijn echt afval. Dus ga daar mee om zoals u met afval behoort om te gaan. Het hoort in uw vuilnisbak of in een openbare afvalbak en dat is niet de straat of de natuur, noch een rioolput.
Vrijwel iedere sigaret is op het punt van het begin van de filter te breken. Als iedereen eens zou beginnen om de filter van het tabak en papier af te breken en in het pakje terug te doen (dat stinkt dan niet). Op die manier kunnen de filters samen met het pakje in de prullenbak, in plaats van miljarden(!) filters in de natuur.
Ja goed gezegd, en dan als ik op straat loop om een fris luchtje te scheppen, moet ik steeds die sigarettenlucht op snuiven. Vanmiddag zat ik even aan de IJssel een biertje te drinken, ik moest ongewild mee roken. Wanneer is dat eens afgelopen.
