De landsregering heeft de “ontwerp-rijksstructuurvisie Grevelingen en Volkerak-Zoommeer” vastgesteld en daarmee het voornemen kenbaar gemaakt een beperkt getij terug te brengen in het Volkerak-Zoommeer en deze wateren op termijn te verzilten. De komende maanden zullen op deze site artikelen verschijnen die ingaan op de oorzaken en gevolgen van voornoemd regeringsbesluit.
Kern motivatie van het besluit tot verzilting is dat ‘verzilting de definitieve oplossing zou zijn voor de aanpak van de blauwalgproblematiek in het Volkerak-Zoommeer’.
Nu bestrijdt ondergetekende dat er nog sprake is van een blauwalgproblematiek op het Volkerak-Zoommeer, maar laten we voor de discussie maar eens aannemen dat er nu of in de toekomst van een zoet Volkerak-Zoommeer nog sprake zou kunnen zijn van een blauwalgprobleem. Is verzilting dan een definitieve oplossing? De blauwalg (cyanobacterie) die tot 2011 met regelmaat tot bloei kwam in het Volkerak-Zoommeer is de micro-cystis. De micro-systis is een zoetwater blauwalg. Na verzilting zal deze inderdaad niet meer voor komen in het Volkerak-Zoommeer en in die zin is verzilting dus een oplossing. Maar als je kijkt naar de reden van het voorkomen van blauwalgen is dat zij floreren in water dat niet of nauwelijks doorstroomt en dat hoge concentraties bevat van voedingsstoffen (nutriënten) als fosfaten en nitraten. Blauwalgen komen ook in zoutwater voor. Dat zijn wel andere soorten maar ze gedijen in wateren die voldoen aan de criteria: slecht doorstromend, en met veel voedingsstoffen. Dit soort omstandigheden doen zich elders in de wereld, ook in zout water, voor en dan floreren de blauwalgen. Als voorbeeld de Oostzee (Baltic-Sea). De Oostzee kent slechts een beperkt getij, bevat veel relatieve ondiepten en hoge concentraties voedingsstoffen. Kortom, zij het op een andere schaal, lijkt de Oostzee veel op een straks zout Volkerak-Zoommeer. De Oostzee kent een zeer ernstige blauwalgproblematiek! Na verzilting zal het Volkerak- Zoommeer nog steeds, ondanks een beperkt getij, weinig doorstroming kennen en ook de concentraties aan voedingsstoffen in de vorm van fosfaten en nitraten zullen hoog blijven. De woordvoerders van Rijkswaterstaat op de informatiebijeenkomst van 28 oktober 2014 in het Markiezenhof ontkrachten het bovenstaande niet. Op vragen vanuit het publiek was tot twee keer toe het antwoord: “verzilting is de oplossing voor deze blauwalg, micro-cystis.”, zonder dat er ingegaan werd op het voorbeeld van de Oostzee en of blauwalgbloei in een zout Volkerak- Zoommeer voor zou kunnen komen. Moeten we voor verzilting en het beperkt getij dan 280 miljoen euro uitgeven?
