Akkervegetatie op begraafplaatsen
Als p
ublicaties gaan over akkerrandvegetaties, hebben deze gelijk mijn belangstelling. Veel waterschappen kennen immers subsidies voor de instandhouding van akkerranden om de kenmerkende akkervegetaties in stand te houden.
Wanneer de flora op begraafplaatsen vergeleken wordt met de flora van akkerranden, is er een opvallend grote gelijkenis te zien. De vegetaties op akkerranden en op begraafplaatsen blijken gedomineerd te worden door klaprozen, ereprijzen, kamilles en wikkes. Dit komt vermoedelijk omdat beide biotopen deels, door menselijk handelen, op elkaar lijken. Akkers worden enkele malen per jaar geploegd en bewerkt, terwijl begraafplaatsen een aantal keren per jaar geschoffeld worden. Eénjarige akkerplanten kunnen goed tegen deze constante verstoring en bloeien vaak meerdere keren per jaar en komen derhalve toch toe aan zaad/ vruchtvorming. Zo zorgen zij dat, wanneer zij ‘het onderspit delven’, volgende generaties toch een kans krijgen.
Begraafplaatsen kennen net als akkers een grote diversiteit. Er zijn begraafplaatsen met een gesloten grasvegetatie, een type waarbij alleen korstmossen en mossen goed gedijen, maar de akkerflora vaak weinig kans krijgt. De akkerflora gedijt voornamelijk op open grind- en zandbodems. Het type grond is hierbij het meest bepalend voor de soorten die er te vinden zijn. Ook de leeftijd van de begraafplaatsen lijkt een rol te spelen. Veel akkerplanten hebben de jongere begraafplaatsen nog niet bereikt. De kans daarop is kleiner dan vroeger, omdat sommige soorten misschien al te zeldzaam zijn geworden. Het is prachtig dat de zeldzaam wordende akkerflora een toevluchtsoord heeft gevonden op begraafplaatsen.
Op begraafplaatsen wordt aanzienlijk minder gespoten, waardoor veel éénjarige planten hun cyclus toch op tijd weten te voltooien. Meerjarige soorten kunnen dit enkel op begraafplaatsen waar niet gespoten wordt. Het is nog steeds goed zoeken, want ook op begraafplaatsen zijn ze absoluut niet algemeen. Soorten die met enige regelmaat te vinden zijn op begraafplaatsen zijn onder andere: akkerleeuwenbek, akkerereprijs, ruige klaproos en de akkergeelster.
De vraag is nu wat betekent deze kennis nu voor de alsmaar oplaaiende discussie over de instandhouding van akkerrand subsidies? Het meest verbaast mij bij dit soort onderzoeken dat de uitkomst al lang verbonden is in onze taal. Zo wordt een begraafplaats soms dodenakker genoemd en ook de slagvelden, waar klaprozen goed bleken te gedijen op de met bloed doortrokken bodem. Een waarneming die zelfs heeft geleid tot het symbool waarmee de Engelsen en Canadezen hun gevallenen herdenken.

In de avond een coalitieoverleg over de invulling van de vacature in het Dagelijks Bestuur (DB). Er bleek geen draagvlak voor onze inbreng om het aantal DB leden terug te brengen tot vier plus de dijkgraaf. Uiteindelijk kan de voorgedragen kandidaat van ongebouwd rekenen op een brede ondersteuning van de coalitiefracties.

De dag begon met een DB vergadering met onder andere de agendapunten: de samenwerkingsovereenkomst tot uitvoering waterdoelen, de begroting 2017 belastingsamenwerking West-Brabant, de bestuurlijke vernieuwing, uitwisseling inspectiegegevens, de restauratie Keenesluis en een actualisatie van de algemene regels en beleidsregels keur.
Aan het begin van de middag een portefeuillehouderoverleg (PHO) over een business case oppervlaktewatersysteem in de gemeente Oosterhout.
Daarna een PHO over het dijkverbeteringproject Geertruidenberg/Amertak over de strategie bij de afweging meekoppelkansen. Daarna over de aanpassingen aan de waterhuishouding en de regionale kering bij Waalwijk als gevolg van de gemeentelijk plannen om een nieuwe haven aan te leggen.
Daarna een bijeenkomst in het kader van het project expertsessie ‘water in de tuin’ van de gemeente Bergen op Zoom in het Natuurpodium Brabantse Wal als vervolg op de bijeenkomst op 20 januari waar ik eerder over schreef . Er werd gewerkt aan een actieplan om de aanpak van de klimaatadaptatie en de hittestress samen met de aanwezigen vorm te geven.
