Modern asfalt?
Op 4 augustus stond er een artikel in de Volkskrant met de uitdagende kop: “Wie legt het modernste asfalt”. Een poging van Marc van den Eerenbeemt om Nederlandse asfaltbedrijven, zoals Dura Vermeer en Heijmans, te profileren als modern en toekomstgericht. Wat mij betreft blijkt die ’toekomst gerichtheid’ niet uit het artikel. Het is normaal, in een markt die 8 tot 10 miljoen ton asfalt produceert, dat deze iets doet aan productverbetering. Geluidsbeperking werd in het artikel belicht. Wat ik echter in het artikel node miste is een meer innovatieve aanpak door de genoemde bedrijven van belangrijke maatschappelijke problemen, die mede veroorzaakt worden door het gebruik van asfalt als verhardingsmateriaal van wegen, zoals een onderzoek naar verbetering van de afvloeiingscoëfficient van hemelwater en hittestress. In warme periodes leidt hittestress tot oversterfte. Als voorbeeld een hittegolf in Frankrijk in 2003 die tot meer dan 11.000 extra doden leidde.
Asfalt op wegen en daken (zwarte bitumen) hebben een enorme bijdrage aan de vorming van hitte eilanden in steden en gebouwde omgevingen. Zowel hittestress als wateroverlast zijn forse maatschappelijke problemen, die door de optredende klimaatverandering steeds prominenter op de agenda moeten komen van iedereen. Dus ook van asfalt grootmachten. De albedowaarden (mate van reflectie van zonlicht, c.q. mate waarin zonnewarmte wordt opgeslagen) van standaard asfalt zijn verschrikkelijk slecht. 85 tot 96 procent (bron: Groenblauwe netwerken, handleiding voor veerkrachtige steden) van de zonne-energie die instraalt op asfalt wordt opgenomen door het asfalt en in de nacht weer afgegeven aan de omgeving. Dat kost bij een hittegolf doden. Potentieel veel doden. Wordt daar onderzoek naar gedaan bij de genoemde asfalt bedrijven? Ik lees er niets over! Elders wordt daar wel onderzoek gedaan naar alternatieve bestratingsmaterialen. Een goed voorbeeld daarvan is: “On the Use of Cool Materials as a Heat Island Mitigation Strategy“. Het kan dus wel. Als Volkskrant lezer verwacht ik van mijn krant en haar journalisten geen reclame artikel, maar artikelen waar, als een onderwerp wordt belicht zoals noodzakelijke vernieuwing en verbetering van de toepassing van asfalt, de maatschappelijke problemen die daarbij een rol spelen, zoals de invloed op de hemelwaterproblematiek en hittestress, aan de orde komen en bedrijven daarop worden aangesproken.
