Japanse Duizenknoop Fallopia Japonica
De Japanse duizendknoop is een exoot die ooit als sierplant naar Nederland kwam. Nu heeft de plant zich door het hele land verspreid en nu woekert hij in dijken, tuinen, bermen, bossen en langs de waterkant. De wortels van de Japanse duizendknoop maken dijken, fietspaden, wegen, funderingen en muren kapot en groeit dwars door zaken zoals elektriciteitskasten.
De plant oefent dan een behoorlijke druk uit op de muur of het wegdek. En hij groeit hard: als de stengels in het voorjaar uitlopen, kunnen ze in drie tot vier weken 1,5 meter omhoog schieten. Doordat de duizendknoop sterk is en snel groeit, is de plant een grotere bedreiging dan bijvoorbeeld boomwortels en taai helmgras dat ook door scheuren en gaten groeit.
Als bestuurder van een waterschap ben ik mij bewust van de dreiging voor onze dijken door de Japanse duizendknoop. Ik raad dan ook iedere bestuurder van een waterschap of gemeente aan kennis te nemen van een filmpje van RTV Oost. Zoals wel vaker hebben onze zuiderburen hun eigen oplossing gevonden. Opeten, de Japanse duizendknoop smaakt naar rabarber. De plant kan verwerkt worden tot compote; in stukjes snijden en 20 minuten koken in water met suiker.
Bestrijden is noodzaak en stop met dit soort uitheemse soorten te planten in de tuin.
KLIMAATVERANDERINGEN
Ik dacht dat de aandacht voor door de mens veroorzaakte c.q. beïnvloede klimaatverandering van recente datum was. Door het lezen van het boek “Drawdown” ben ik er achter dat reeds vele wetenschappers hier in het verleden op hebben gewezen waarvan Alexander von Humboldt volgens een artikel in Drawdown de eerste was.
Voor het eerst in 1800, tijdens zijn reis door Zuid-Amerika, verbond hij menselijk handelen met veranderingen in de natuur en de mogelijke invloed op de atmosfeer en daarmee op het klimaat door ontbossingen.
In 1831, na zijn reis door Rusland en Siberië, stelde hij dat de door de mensheid veroorzaakte vernietiging van de bossen lange termijneffecten veroorzaakten op het klimaat. Hij verwees daarbij niet alleen naar ontbossingen, maar ook naar grootschalige irrigaties en naar de grote hoeveelheden stoom en gas, geproduceerd in industriële complexen. Alexander von Humboldt was zijn tijd ver vooruit. Des te verbijsterender is het dat er heden ten dage nog politici zijn die de mede door de mens veroorzaakte klimaatveranderingen ontkennen.
