UW TUIN EN WATEROVERLAST EN HITTESTRESS
Tuinbezitters kunnen meer doen om wateroverlast na hoosbuien of gevolgen van langdurige droogte en hitte te beperken. Soms kan dat al met kleine slimme en simpele aanpassingen aan de tuin.
Waterschappen, gemeenten, Rijksoverheid en het bedrijfsleven trekken samen op om tuinbezitters hierbij te helpen hun tuin meer klimaatbestendig te maken. Daartoe is een “Handboek voor de watervriendelijke tuin“. Het handboek is een uitgave van Vereniging Gemeenten voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling, atelier GROENBLAUW en Tuinbranche Nederland en is mede mogelijk gemaakt door Stichting RIONED, STOWA en het Ministerie van Infrastructuur & Waterstaat.
De doelstelling van het handboek is tuincentra te helpen hun miljoenen bezoekers te informeren, inspireren en te activeren. Het bevat praktische tips over bruikbare producten en aanpassingen aan de tuin. Bijvoorbeeld: zorgen voor een gezonde bodem en voor meer schaduw, welke planten te gebruiken en hoe beter water op te vangen.
De overheden beseffen dat de problemen veroorzaakt door de klimaatveranderingen het beste aangepakt kunnen worden in samenwerking tussen overheden om tuinbezitters de handvatten aan te reiken waarmee zij aan de slag kunnen.
ZOET/ZOUT
Met het besluit van de Minister van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen om fors geld te steken in een gezonde natuur en water heeft de tongen in West-Brabant en Bergen op Zoom weer los gemaakt.
Voor het Grevelingenmeer wordt €75 miljoen ingezet om een doorlaat te maken in de Brouwersdam, zodat het water in het meer doorlopend wordt ververst waardoor de natuur zich herstelt. Dat is voor het Grevelingenmeer hard nodig. Het Grevelingenmeer is op grotere diepten dood. En het water aan de oppervlakte is van een bedroevende kwaliteit en steeds minder toeristisch aantrekkelijk. Het Grevelingenmeer is stilstaand zout water. Met de 75 miljoen van de Rijksoverheid en het extra geld van de provincies Zeeland, Zuid-Holland en enkele gemeenten gaat het zoute water ververst worden door een getijdeslag van circa 50 centimeter.
Sommigen bepleiten al jaren de terugkeer van zout water in het Krammer, Volkerak, Zoommeer systeem in de hoop dat de waterkwaliteit van dat systeem dan verbeterd. Het is goed te realiseren dat, als er in de Oesterdam en of Philipsdam een dergelijke doorlaat zou worden gemaakt, de eventuele getijdeslag veel kleiner zal zijn. Hierdoor kan een verzilt Krammer, Volkerak, Zoommeer systeem soortgelijke problemen krijgen als nu in de Grevelingen. De gedachte dat het bij een zout Zoommeer makkelijk en goedkoop zal zijn de Binnenschelde te verzilten gaat niet geheel op. Het waterpeil van de Binnenschelde ligt bijna 1,5 meter hoger dan het Zoommeer. Alle verversing moet dan door inpompen en aflaten kunstmatig tot stand worden gebracht, een blijvende kostbare zaak.
De gevolgen van een verzilting van het Krammer, Volkerak, Zoommeer systeem zijn groot. Zoetwater gebrek voor de landbouw, verzilting van de bodem tot Oudenbosch toe, waardoor veel teelten lagere opbrengsten geven. Meer en andere corrosieve effecten op het scheepvaartverkeer op de Rijn-Schelde verbinding (ik schreef daar eerder over). De gevolgen voor Bergen op Zoom zijn ook de mogelijke zoutindringing van de bodem van de Bergse Plaat met risico’s voor de funderingen. Zoute lucht geef ook hogere onderhoudskosten aan huizen en gebouwen. Verven en metalen corroderen en verweren sneller. Op de website van Ons Water schreef ik in dit dossier al meer dan 40 artikelen.
Het is jammer dat velen geen afscheid kunnen nemen van een soort van zoute nostalgie. Nooit meer 1953 heeft geleid tot de aanleg van de dammen. Dat heeft gevolgen. De natuur past zich geleidelijk aan. De ervaren overlast is al van een volstrekt andere orde dan in 2003 toen de discussie zoet/zout startte. De fosfaat- en nitraatgehalten (de voedingstoffen van de algen) dalen al jaren. De natuur doet gratis het goede werk en er komt een moment dat de biotoop in het Krammer, Volkerak, Zoommeer systeem in evenwicht is. De plannenmakerij duurt al circa 15 jaar. De onzekerheid over de verzilting van het Krammer, Volkerak-Zoommeer systeem, en als afgeleide de Binnenschelde, duurt voort en dat is meer dan vervelend. Het wordt tijd dat de overheid en de politici bij zinnen komen en de plannenmakerij afblazen als volkomen overbodig en te risicovol.
En voor de Bergenaren: Jammer dat de krabben aan onze kust zijn verdwenen. Maar we hebben er veiligheid, minder onderhoudskosten en bij vorst een mooie ijsvlakte om te schaatsen voor terug gekregen. En ook tijdens de vastenavondperiode voelen we ons echt niet minder krabben omdat ze voor onze kusten verdwenen zijn.
