OVER WATER – 147: BOSBOUW EN BEGRAZING GAAN HEEL GOED SAMEN

In Over Water 145 schreef ik o.a. over hoe de ideeën van Ernst Gotsch inzake de combinatie van landbouw en bosbouw vorm gegeven kunnen worden en hoe door de vermenging van bomen en gewassen het koolstofgehalte van de bodem en de productiviteit van het land verbeterd kunnen worden en hoe bosbouw en begrazing (silvopasture) gecombineerd kunnen worden met een bijzondere kwaliteit vlees als gevolg.
Tot mijn blijdschap kwam ik op zaterdag 21 juli in de wetenschapsbijlage van de NRC een artikel tegen over dezelfde onderwerpen met de titel: “Bomen moeten terug op het land” en als subtitel: “het combineren van land- en bosbouw biedt perspectief op verduurzaming. Plant en dier profiteren van elkaar.” Het mooie van het artikel vond ik de voorbeelden van boeren in Nederland die de vermenging van landbouw en bosbouw al in praktijk proberen te brengen, zoals Wim van Roessel uit Riel die in zijn bedrijfsvoering op zijn boerderij De Regte Heijden in 2014 een bosweide (1ha) heeft aangelegd. Dit is een combinatie van bomen en heesters met vee en veevoerproductie. De bomen, vee en weiland worden beheerd als één systeem. De bomen (appels en peren) geven schaduw, hetgeen goed is voor de gezondheid van het vee. In de bosweide staat ook een bijenkast. Ik vind dit een prachtig voorbeeld van hoe het moet. Het geeft mij ook een goed gevoel dat dit voorbeeld zich bevindt in het werkgebied van het waterschap de Brabantse Delta, waar ik zelf als bestuurder mag functioneren.
In het NRC artikel wordt ook verwezen naar studies zoals van Paul Burgess van de Cranfield University die aantonen hoe profijtelijk het combineren van landbouw met bosbouw kan zijn en hoe ecologische doelen samen kunnen gaan met goed, profijtelijk en maatschappelijk verantwoord boeren
