Betrek daarbij ook nadrukkelijk de albedo-eigenschappen van de te gebruiken materialen.
Een aantal voorbeelden
Een zwart bitumen dak reflecteert slechts 4 tot 5 % van het zonlicht. Dat betekent dat circa 95 % van het zonlicht als warmte wordt geabsorbeerd. De bedekking met wit grind van het zwarte bitumen reduceert die warmteabsorptie naar 50 a 70 %.
Standaard asfalt absorbeert 85 tot 96 % van het zonlicht en zet dat om in warmte. Lichtgrijs asfalt absorbeert circa 75 %, en met gemalen schelpen witgemaakt asfalt absorbeert nog veel minder van het zonlicht.
Donkere betonnen dakpannen absorberen 65 tot 95 % van het zonlicht en zetten dat om in warmte. Witte betonnen dakpannen absorberen circa 30 % van het zonlicht en leggen dus veel minder warmte vast.
Onbehandelde metalendaken, bijvoorbeeld van zink absorberen 50 tot 70% van het zonlicht.
Uit deze voorbeelden blijkt dat door andere materiaalkeuzes de hittestress aanzienlijk kan worden verminderd. Bedenk dat overdag opgenomen warmte in de nacht weer wordt afgegeven waardoor de nachten in zo’n hittestressperiode geen of minder afkoeling geven. Alle reden om bij een nieuwbouw of verbouwing bewust te kiezen en de gevolgen voor de hittestress daarbij te betrekken.
