In Over Water 145 (augustus 2018) schreef ik onder andere over het boek “drawdown” dat tal van oplossingsrichtingen geeft om het CO2-probleem aan te pakken. Een CO2-‘oplossing’ waarover steeds vaker wordt geschreven is het mineraal olivijn, een magnesium-ijzersilicaat. Olivijn reageert snel met het CO2 in de atmosfeer. De eindproducten van de reactie zijn, afhankelijk van de samenstelling van het olivijn, magnesiumcarbonaat, siliciumoxide (zand) en ijzeroxide. Door olivijn te vermalen en dan eenvoudig uit te strooien, bijvoorbeeld over ons zandpad in de tuin, kunnen wij zelf in de CO2 reductie een bijdrage leveren. Olivijn is in Nederland verkrijgbaar bij GreenSand.
In de Volkskrant van 2 oktober 2021 werd deze CO2-oplossing nader uitgewerkt in het artikel “Laat de oceaan het oplossen”. Daarin doet Gert-Jan Reichart (hoogleraar mariene geologie en betrokken bij NWO-NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research) de suggestie de landmassa van IJsland te gaan vermalen en het maalsel in zee te storten, waarna het olivijn de CO2 in het zeewater bindt en het zeewater weer CO2 uit de lucht kan opnemen. Die vulkanische rotsen bevatten veel olivijn. Volgens hem is dit de enige manier om de CO2 concentratie in de lucht omlaag te krijgen en te gaan voldoen aan de eis van de maximaal 1,5 graad opwarming.
Als het niet lukt de uitstoot van CO2 te beperken, zullen we echt aan het verwijderen ervan moeten gaan denken.
