Geacht Dagelijks bestuur,
Willem van Ham: archivaris, historicus, vlaggenkundige en heraldicus overleed op 3 juni 2020 op 83-jarige leeftijd.
Hij wijdde zijn hele (werkzame) leven aan onderzoek en publiceren. Hij heeft ontelbare archieven waaronder waterschaparchieven ontsloten en toegelicht. Door deze ontsluiting is de weg geopend voor verder onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de waterschappen in het werkgebied van het waterschap Brabantse Delta door andere wetenschappers.
Hij heeft 592 publicaties op zijn naam waaronder minimaal 32 water/waterschap-gerelateerde werken o.a. het standaardwerk Polders in kaart. Noord West-Brabant 1565-1590 (zie bijlage). Ook de andere werken bevatten vaak elementen die water en/of waterschapgerelateerd zijn.
Aan vele facetten van de West-Brabantse (waterschaps-)geschiedenis heeft hij studies gewijd en er publicaties over uitgebracht. Hij heeft ook gewerkt bij het archivariaat Nassau Brabant dat veel van de waterschapsarchieven beheerde.
Zijn verdiensten voor de stad, provincie, waterschappen en de regio kunnen niet worden overschat. In 2007 ontving hij de onderscheiding van Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.
Als er één inwoner van ons werkgebied het verdient om geëerd te worden en blijvend herinnerd voor zijn verdienste dan is het – mijns inziens – archivaris, historicus, vlaggenkundige en heraldicus Willem van Ham.
Veel waterschapswerken dragen namen van voormalige dijkgraven en heemraden, illustere voorgangers die goed werk hebben verricht voor de veiligheid van onze dijken en voor goed waterbeheer. Het werk van al die geerde voorgangers en de geschiedenis van de waterschappen moet echter ook inzichtelijk gemaakt worden voor de mens en ingelanden van nu. Dat was het werk van Willem van Ham. Hij heeft zijn leven gewijd aan het toegankelijk maken van de West-Brabantse geschiedenis, waaronder die van de waterschappen.

Archivarissen en historici als Willem van Ham worden zelden geëerd en dat is jammer en mijns inziens onterecht. Het zal bij u niet onbekend zijn dat ongetekende een zekere liefde heeft voor de geschiedenis van ons gebied en de waterschappen in het bijzonder. Ik kijk met enige trots terug op het – onder mijn verantwoordelijkheid als oud-lid van uw gezelschap – het onder één dak brengen van al onze archieven. Ik vraag u dan ook een manier te vinden om Willem van Ham te eren/gedenken in ons ’huis’ of in ons werkgebied. Bijvoorbeeld door een vergaderzaal of de archiefruimte naar hem te vernoemen of bijvoorbeeld een deel van de toekomstige digitale ontsluiting van alle (oude) waterschaparchieven naar hem te vernoemen. Ondergetekende laat de invulling graag aan uw wijsheid over.
