Water in combinatie met muggen die ziekten overbrengen zijn al eeuwen een probleem in Nederland en nu rukt er een voor ons nieuw muggenrisico op! Het westnijlvirus wordt sinds kort gevonden in Nederland. En net als in het midden van de vorige eeuw kunnen we weer dood gaan aan een steek van de gewone huissteekmug! In de vorige eeuw was het malaria dat slachtoffers maakte. Ik schreef er eerder over.
Het westnijlvirus behoort tot de Flavi-virussen die tal van nare (tropische) ziekten veroorzaken zoals gele koorts, knokkelkoorts en Zika. Vogels zoals de huismus en de koolmees kunnen drager zijn en het virus via een mug overdragen op de mens. Er is nog geen goede behandeling voor een westnijlinfectie, laat staan een vaccin!
Het wordt tijd dat het publiek meegenomen wordt in beperking van de voortplanting van muggen. Muggen planten zich graag voort in tijdelijk stilstaand water met weinig natuurlijke vijanden. Door steeds vaker droogvallende wateren verdwijnen vissen en amfibieën en daarmee de eters van de muggenlarven. Veel tuinen bevatten veel broedplaatsen. Niet optimaal geïnstalleerde regentonnen, putjes onder buitenkranen, verstopte dakgoten, lege plantenpotten of lekschoteltjes, zwembadjes, asbakken, niet goed afgevulde autobanden die als bloemperk worden gebruikt, waxinelicht-houders enzovoort.
Ook voor beheerders van de open rioolsystemen is er werk te doen. Kijk hoe rioolputten minder aantrekkelijk voor muggen kunnen worden. Ook waterschappen zullen nu moeten bedenken hoe de natuurlijke vijanden van muggen meer blijvende kansen krijgen in ons systeem.
Als we er nu niet mee aan de slag gaan, verliezen we kostbare tijd en slapen we straks allemaal onder de klamboe en krijgen de verkopers van horren veel werk. Ook wordt ontspannen op het terras zitten een stukje spannender als we daar mee een, in potentie, dodelijke ziekte kunnen oplopen.
